PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS SATURDAY OCTOBER 31 – MONDAY NOVEMBER 2

Chelsea v Liverpool – Saturday 1245

Positions: Chelsea 15th, Liverpool 9th

Form (League matches only – earliest matches first):

Chelsea
LWDLWL (7pts)

Liverpool
LDWDDD (7pts)

  • Some reports say a defeat for Chelsea could spell the end for Jose Mourinho. As their season continues to go from bad to worse on and off the field, Chelsea may be grateful that Liverpool themselves look far from convincing. Diego Costa has a late fitness test.

Swansea City v Arsenal – Saturday 1500

Positions: Swansea 12th, Arsenal 2nd

Form:

Swansea
LDLDLW (5pts)

Arsenal
WLWWWW (15pts)

  • Arsenal have the best points record over the past six matches, and will be confident of another win here, in spite of the injuries they sustained in their League Cup tie in midweek.

Crystal Palace v Manchester United – Saturday 1500

Positions: Crystal Palace 7th, Man Utd 4th

Form:

Crystal Palace
LLWWLL (6pts)

Man Utd
WWWLWD (13pts)

  • With just one defeat in six, Man Utd are strongly fancied again here. Palace’s good start appears to be fading, and in spite of their high league position, none of their forwards have found the net so far. Home advantage may not count for much as away wins have been more frequent than home wins in the Premier League so far.

Manchester City v Norwich City– Saturday 1500

Positions: Man City 1st, Norwich 16th

Form:

Man City
WLLWWD (13pts)

Norwich
WDDLLL (5pts)

  • In spite of appearing to have several key players injured, Man City are still in fantastic goalscoring form. After three straight defeats, this will be a very tough match for Norwich.

Watford v West Ham United– Saturday 1500

Positions: Watford 13th, West Ham 3rd

Form:

Watford
WWLDLW (10pts)

West Ham
WWDDWW (14pts)

  • Bouyant West Ham have an excellent away record, and Watford a poor home record. Will these records continue here?

Newcastle United v Stoke City – Saturday 1500

Positions: Newcastle 19th, Stoke 14th

Form:

Newcastle
LLDLWL (4pts)

Stoke
LDWWWL (10pts)

  • Enigmatic Newcastle must try to take heart from the fact they carved out 21 attempts in their defeat by Sunderland. Fabricio Collocini has had his red card from the derby match overturned.

West Bromwich Albion v Leicester City – Saturday 1500

Positions: West Brom 10th, Leicester 5th

Form:

West Brom
DWLLWW (10pts)

Leicester
WDLWDW (11pts)

  • Can Jamie Vardy score again and make it eight matches in a row? Although West Brom have won their last two, they have still scored fewer goals as an entire team than Vardy this season.

Everton v Sunderland – Sunday 1330

Positions: Everton 11th, Sunderland 18th

Form:

Everton
WDWDLL (8pts)

Sunderland
LLLDLW (4pts)

  • Sunderland finally recorded their first win last week, but perhaps enjoyed more than a degree of luck against Newcastle. Will simply having a win on the board spur them on to further success? Everton have lost the last two after enjoying a good run before that.

Southampton v Bournemouth - Sunday 1600

Positions: Southampton 8th, Bournemouth 17th

Form:

Southampton
DLWWDD (9pts)

Bournemouth
LWLDLL (4pts)

  • In the first top flight derby between the teams, Southampton go into the match unbeaten in four, while Bournemouth are without a win in four.

Can Bournemouth Get A Positive
Result Against Southampton?

Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa – Monday 2000

Positions: Tottenham 6th, Aston Villa 20th

Tottenham
DWWDDW (12pts)

Aston Villa
LLLLLL (0pts)

  • Tim Sherwood has paid the price for Villa’s wretched form, and with the club still under caretaker management, they face a very difficult match at Tottenham, who have still not lost since the opening day.

A Question of Statistics

This year the UK has 8,284 active brood mares. Less than in 2013. They foaled the lowest number for a long time too, 4328 between them.

Over the past few years 700-800 new brood mares were registered  on average, and 761 retired. The best breeding age is between 5 and 12 with an average of 11 months for gestation which can be from 10 to 13 months.

Apparently there are statistics of how many foals a dam will produce over 8 or 9 years of breeding activity. They produce at their best between 5 and 13 years of age when most of the foals on are born live. Yes there are dead ones.

146 stallions were on the job in 2014 and those in their 3rd year of covering mares did 80% of the work.  63% of them are stallions aged between 6 years and 14 years old. 50% of the stallions are British, the rest are Irish, American, German, Australian, French or Brazilian - very international. They work from late February to late June. Nice work for some.

With so many foals bred for the race course one would think statistics to find how many actually got there would be easy. You would also think it possible to know how many are sold on for other duties and how many end up at the slaughter house! But it is not.

It is common knowledge that 302 race horses died on the race course whilst racing last year but what happened to the rest that no longer race. That too is proving very difficult to find out.  Some do get re-homed or re- trained but not too many. Few hundred may be.

I will take a look at that over the next week and see if I can’t find out how many race horses end up going through the slaughter houses and what happens in the coming weeks.

Darting Around

Aileen De Graff
I have played darts at pub level, when girls were not supposed to play, often getting the better of the men’s team. I even practised at home but my family frowned on the association with beer and pubs. I got to play on the pub team though. Two men and two ladies. We did quite well but I can’t say I can recall the league we played in or our final position.

Glen  Durrant
So, to world darts : Glen Durrant won the BDO (British Darts Organisation) World Masters title earlier in October, beating Larry Butler 7-3. He goes forward into 2016 competitions ranked as No. 1. Aileen De Graff won the Ladies World Masters beating double world champ Lisa Ashton 5-4.

Youthful Champions.

The World Youth Championship is next month. It is good to see the youngsters making their way to championships. They never existed when I was younger.

The Young Sports Personality of the Year Award has been open for nominations since 23rd September. It is still open soyou can still nominate someone. à http://goo.gl/OFMOTs Download the form. Fill it in and send to sports.personality@bbc.co.uk or by post to YOUNG SPOTY 2015, 3RD Floor, Quay House, Media city UK, Salford Quays, M50 2QH.

Double Trouble.

Richie Burnett is in trouble with life. No drug is worth the damage no matter how up you feel when you use it. You always come down and go down further than you go up. It is a one way ticket to a grave, spiritually and physically. I hope that during the next 18 months he handles thoroughly. I know of a really good rehab place that runs a drug free programme for addicts if he wants to enquire.

Cricket on the Wicket

How well I remember three sticks for the wicket and a twig to lie across them in the alley where we played cricket as kids. We had three to a team, a pitch that was often mostly mud, and all players under the age of 12 - Well you have to start somewhere don’t you? The same ally was used for marbles competition, messing about with fireworks, (health and safety miles away) and generally having a good time. Let’s see some fireworks in England’s play in the next test that began Thursday.

Mark Vermeulen

Racism has reared its ugly head. Mark Vermeulen has been banned from all cricket activity after calling black people apes. He made the remark on his FB page. He said later, “I know my comments were over the top and I apologise to all that I have offended. But, as a cricketer, it’s how our minds work." Are you trying to say all cricketers have the same mind set? Not cool Vermeulen, not cool at all.

Both Vermeulen and Burnett bring their sports into disrepute. What do you think they should do to make up the damage? Let us know, make a comment.

I would like to mention that the English women’s team would like a male coach this year if there is anyone out there that would like to apply. The quals (qualifications) include international experience. Remember England are ranked no. 2 in the first International Cricket Council rankings list.

PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS SATURDAY OCTOBER 24 – SUNDAY OCTOBER 25

Aston Villa v Swansea City – Saturday 1500

Positions: Aston Villa 19th, Swansea 14th

Form:

Aston Villa
(last six League matches – earliest first): DLLLLL (1pt)

Swansea
WLDLDL (5pts)

  • Things remain pretty dismal for Villa, but a home match against a Swansea side who are hardly setting the league alight could provide the ideal opportunity to bag what would be just their second win.

Leicester City v Crystal Palace – Saturday 1500

Positions: Leicester 5th, Crystal Palace 6th

Form:

Leicester
DWDLWD (9pts)

Crystal Palace
WLLWWL (9pts)

  • Another comeback earned Leicester a draw at Southampton to maintain their excellent league position. Jamie Vardy will become only the sixth player in Premier League history to score in seven successive matches if he finds the target here. Palace meanwhile continue to enjoy life in the top six, but have a poor record against the other sides near the top. Palace are one of only two sides yet to record a draw this year, the other being leaders Man City.

Norwich City v West Bromwich Albion – Saturday 1500

Positions: Norwich 16th, West Brom 13th

Form:

Norwich
LWDDLL (5pts)

West Brom
WDWLLW (10pts)

  • So how will Norwich react after their pummelling at Newcastle? They may be grateful for the fact they are facing a West Brom side who have scored just seven goals in nine matches, however good their recent form might appear.

Stoke City v Watford – Saturday 1500

Positions: Stoke 11th, Watford 15th

Form:

Stoke
LLDWWW (10pts)

Watford
LWWLDL (7pts)

  • After not winning any of their first six, things may be changing dramatically for Stoke. They will certainly be confident going into this game, even if their three wins have all been by a single goal. Watford are however still unbeaten when not playing a top six team.

West Ham United v Chelsea – Saturday 1500

Positions: West Ham 4th, Chelsea 12th

Form:

West Ham
WWWDDW (12pts)

Chelsea
LLWDLW (7pts)

  • 10 points adrift of Man City, have Chelsea’s realistic chances of retaining their title already gone? Few expect them not to finish higher than they stand at the moment, and will last week’s win kick start their season? Chelsea undoubtedly have the players to win this match, but the trip to a buoyant West Ham could present a stiff test.

Arsenal v Everton – Saturday 1730

Positions: Arsenal 2nd, Everton 9th

Form:

Arsenal
WWLWWW (15pts)

Everton
DWDWDL (9pts)

  • Arsenal are enjoying a fine winning run, and are scoring goals for fun. In addition to their excellent League form, they enjoyed a superb Champions League win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday. Everton face another very tough match – they took a five match unbeaten run into last weekend’s home game with Man Utd, but were still well beaten.

Sunderland v Newcastle United – Sunday 1200

Positions: Sunderland 20th, Newcastle 18th

Form:

Sunderland
DLLLDL (2pts)

Newcastle
LLLDLW (4pts)

  • The first of today’s derby matches sees both sides in the relegation zone. Can Newcastle carry on where they left off the previous week, when they doubled their goal tally for the season in beating Norwich 6-3? The match saw Newcastle score from all of the six attempts they had on target! There could certainly be goals here given both sides’ defensive records. Sunderland are now the only Premier League side without a win.

Bournemouth v Tottenham Hotspur – Sunday 1405

Positions: Bournemouth 17th, Tottenham 7th

Form:

Bournemouth
DLWLDL (5pts)

Tottenham
DDWWDD (10pts)

  • A tough task for Bournemouth as the entertain Spurs, unbeaten since the opening day at Man Utd. Spurs will however hope to start converting draws into wins, and for Harry Kane to start scoring like he did last year.

Manchester United v Manchester City – Sunday 1405

Positions: Man Utd 3rd, Man City 1st

Form:

Man Utd
LWWWDW (13pts)

Man City
WWLLWW (12pts)

  • The Manchester derby could potentially be a superb match, with both teams amongst the goals lately. City’s two league losses this year occurred just a few games ago, yet it doesn’t seem that way, with Pellegrini’s side having scored 11 in the two Premier League matches since. Man Utd also scored three without reply last time out in what on paper looked a tricky match at Everton.

Liverpool v Southampton – Sunday 1615

Positions: Liverpool 10th, Southampton 8th

Form:

Liverpool
LLDWDD (6pts)

Southampton
WDLWWD (11pts)

  • Liverpool remain desperately short of goals, with just eight so far, and face a tricky home game here.

FOUR WHEELS IN THE PADDOCK

F1 drivers are enjoying themselves in USA. Jenson Button took part in a triathlon at Hermosa Beach California - ¼ mile ocean swim, a 10 mile bike ride and a 3 mile run. He won. Meanwhile Daniel Ricciardo went horse riding in Nicaragua (unless there is another Maderas Village somewhere in the USA but I could not find it). Bottas visited the police department in Georgetown, Texas. Hamilton visited Will Smith in LA.  Retired Mark Webber, now 40, likes to be up in the mountains of Colorado for the solitude, a bit different to loud engines, huge crowds and relatively small ‘camper’ vans.

Mark Webber

For some memorable F1 moments à  http://goo.gl/ExyowT. You can see John Watson’s win going no 22 on the grid to win in 1983 at Long Beach Calif.  Nigel Mansel faints in the Dallas heat in 1984 and how the tyres ruined the 2005 Indianapolis.

But Enough of the Trivia:

John Surtees
There is serious stuff to consider. It’s Austin, Texas for the USA Grand prix. The race starts at 19.00 GMT. Lewis will want to win here and nail the driver’s championship. He could be Sports Personality of the Year again too.

John Surtees won it once in 1959. Two racing drivers have each won it twice, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill. Lewis could make it three drivers.

Steve Davis finished in the top three five times over. Princess Anne and her daughter Zara Phillips are the only winners from the same family. The oldest winner was Dai Rees (golfer) back in 1957 aged 44 and Ian Black (swimmer) was the youngest in 1958 aged 17.

Good luck Lewis you will be in good company.

On the Hoof - In More Ways Than One

Champions Day at Ascot last week was a fabulous day for owners, trainers, jockeys and horses alike. TV coverage allowed plenty of time to pick your winner and place your bet. Frankie of course took the first race on Flying Officer, but for all the results, whys and wherefores of the all race winners on the day go here à http://goo.gl/KHHCUf

I did enjoy the televising but there were times when the music for race clip preambles and discussion drowned out the racing noises and the presenters as usual. It’s about time the presenters had a say and ask for it (the music) to be toned down to the point of not being needed at all.
Puts me off to say the least.

Talking about putting people off: The Racing Post reported a drop of 34% in viewing figures for 2015. In 2014 watchers numbered 557,000 but in 2015 it was only 367,000.

Ascot Grandstand

The same afternoon 500,000 watched the amateur boxing on the BBC whilst Bargain Hunt pulled its average of 800,000 during the running of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Champion Stakes. The Rugby World cup also competed for viewers. They didn’t get me though. I for one didn’t bother with the Rugby once the Welsh were out of it and I stayed loyal to the horse racing although I also like Bargain Hunt.

Next year I might just join the party at Ascot itself. 30,967 race goers were there this year. Anyone want to sponsor the ticket price for me? I would love to attend on Ladies Day.

On Ladies Day

Gok bless him is restricted to every adjective in the book repeated over and over with NO mention of the style, colour, design description or cut of the outfits he views when Channel 4 covers racing fashion. The camera man does not give him time. We want the details not repeated adjectives. Producer should take note! Viewing figures would go UP.

Tanya please, please, get someone who really cares and can dress you to your advantage to give you a hand. You have a lot to contend with, weather, clip boards and presenters paraphernalia but there must be some outfits that could enhance your image even so.

Tanya on the far left

What A Surprise

Having swam for Great Britain, Wales, and England in the sixties I follow Olympic swimming. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Chad le Clos, who took gold in the 200 meters butterfly at the London Olympics, when he unexpectedly beat Michael Phelps, is now a race horse owner. The horse is called Unbelievable Chad. Winning a race in September of just under 7 furlongs at Scottsville in South Africa, the prize money was $132,000, (£88,000).

Unbelievable Chad

Last But Not Least

ITV may bid for the next contract to cover horse racing which starts in 2017. Step up your game Channel 4.

Golf Heroes Series (Part 2 of 4)

Who are the Heroes. Finding them is not an easy task. But let us take two possible, Nicklaus and Woods.

Jack Nicklaus, The Golden Bear. PGA tour wins 73, overall champ 5 times, 6 Masters and the Brit Open x 3. 4 times the leading money earner and Player of the year 5 times Nicklaus he received 54 awards- World Golf Hall of Fame on its inaugurated.

Jack with the Brit Open Claret Jug 1966

Tiger Woods; PGA tour wins 79, overall tour champ 4 times, 4 Masters and the Brit Open x 3. 6 times leading money earner and Player of the year 11 times Woods received 92 player awards.

Tiger’s private life and injuries brought the crash. Behaviour apologies didn’t fix much and some shareholders are reputed to have suffered losses of between $5 and $12 billion dollars.

No scandal in Jack’s private life but Golf expert Brent Kelley says (excerpt) that “never the less between the two of them Woods took more money, more scoring's, more player of the year awards more PGA tour wins and his best seasons were better. Jack Nicklaus even agrees with him”.

The hero here? Nicklaus. Why? In sport ethical conduct matters.

Jack’s Congressional Medal

PS Quote from wiki, “On April 8, 2015, Nicklaus hit his first ever hole in one at the Augusta National Golf Club at the age of 75 when participating in the Masters' Par 3 Contest, albeit on the Par 3 Course, while playing with Gary Player and Ben Crenshaw.

Cricket on the Wicket

Well here goes, I’m not exactly a fan I must admit, probably because I don’t understand the rules of the game and those positions on the cricket field like silly mid on.

Silly mid on? Does it mean its a bit silly to be that close to the guy with the bat cause you might just get hit in the head by the ball if it comes in your direction or if he lets go of his bat if it comes to that. ‘Short leg’, someone with one leg shorter than the other?  No idea what ‘follow on’ means.  Is it when the referee says ‘it’s time for tea’, and they all traipse after him to the pavilion? Is the jargon, ‘dismissed’, a form of red card for sending a player off?  In ‘reply’ - the captain’s mobile rang and he answered it?

So, to the drawing board on cricket folks, good old wiki will help me out I expect unless any of you can recommend a really really really simple web site for me to go to that explains it all. I will let you know how I get on.

                                          Featherie Golf Balls

Pakistan and England had a good time out on the pitch in the heat.
How on earth did the Pakistan team make 598 for 9 batters (whoops sorry - batsmen),and England, 523 for 8 batsmen. One person made 200? Wow. Even I know that is pretty good. Both teams batted again and the umpire calls bad light! Bad light stops play so neither side can win? Match drawn. Well they could have played under flood lights but both teams had said no earlier on.

The International Cricket Council is considering the use of different coloured balls in all test matches, like pink! Red is difficult to see in floodlights.

"It may be that we use a different coloured ball for all Tests," said ICC chief executive Dave Richardson.

Short and Sweet

Tennis the Menace.

So Djokovic does it again. Knocks out Murray from being in the Shanghais Open final and then beats Tsonga 6-2, 6-4. Took 78 minutes. I couldn’t find out what the prize money was for winning the final but have found out he has won £10,666,000+ in one season. Nice one. Hope he banked it all before he started spending it. I wonder what he pays Becker? By the way he has a gluten free diet.

Golf on the Green Carpet

Miramar golf Club
There are plenty of golfing to follow from 22nd -25th October 2015.

The LPGA ladies have the Taiwan Championship at the Miramar Golf Club. PGA has the US Tour matches over in Las Vega.

On this side of the pond the European Tour over in Hong Kong is the last men’s tournament for this season.  All the hot shots are taking part. Go here for the list of players and scores once underway http://goo.gl/3jp3tA

Snooker the Bazooka

All the round 2 matches in the Haining Open are known and getting underway the competition having started this morning. Watch this space if you will.
