Who are the Heroes. Finding them is not an easy task. But let us take two possible, Nicklaus and Woods.

Jack Nicklaus, The Golden Bear. PGA tour wins 73, overall champ 5 times, 6 Masters and the Brit Open x 3. 4 times the leading money earner and Player of the year 5 times Nicklaus he received 54 awards- World Golf Hall of Fame on its inaugurated.

Tiger Woods; PGA tour wins 79, overall tour champ 4 times, 4 Masters and the Brit Open x 3. 6 times leading money earner and Player of the year 11 times Woods received 92 player awards.

Tiger’s private life and injuries brought the crash. Behaviour apologies didn’t fix much and some shareholders are reputed to have suffered losses of between $5 and $12 billion dollars.

No scandal in Jack’s private life but Golf expert Brent Kelley says (excerpt) that “never the less between the two of them Woods took more money, more scoring's, more player of the year awards more PGA tour wins and his best seasons were better. Jack Nicklaus even agrees with him”.

The hero here? Nicklaus. Why? In sport ethical conduct matters.

Cricket on the Wicket

Well here goes, I’m not exactly a fan I must admit, probably because I don’t understand the rules of the game and those positions on the cricket field like silly mid on.

Silly mid on? Does it mean its a bit silly to be that close to the guy with the bat cause you might just get hit in the head by the ball if it comes in your direction or if he lets go of his bat if it comes to that. ‘Short leg’, someone with one leg shorter than the other?  No idea what ‘follow on’ means.  Is it when the referee says ‘it’s time for tea’, and they all traipse after him to the pavilion? Is the jargon, ‘dismissed’, a form of red card for sending a player off?  In ‘reply’ - the captain’s mobile rang and he answered it?

So, to the drawing board on cricket folks, good old wiki will help me out I expect unless any of you can recommend a really really really simple web site for me to go to that explains it all. I will let you know how I get on.

Pakistan and England had a good time out on the pitch in the heat.

How on earth did the Pakistan team make 598 for 9 batters (whoops sorry - batsmen),and England, 523 for 8 batsmen. One person made 200? Wow. Even I know that is pretty good. Both teams batted again and the umpire calls bad light! Bad light stops play so neither side can win? Match drawn. Well they could have played under flood lights but both teams had said no earlier on.

The International Cricket Council is considering the use of different coloured balls in all test matches, like pink! Red is difficult to see in floodlights.

"It may be that we use a different coloured ball for all Tests," said ICC chief executive Dave Richardson.

Tennis the Menace.

So Djokovic does it again. Knocks out Murray from being in the Shanghais Open final and then beats Tsonga 6-2, 6-4. Took 78 minutes. I couldn’t find out what the prize money was for winning the final but have found out he has won £10,666,000+ in one season. Nice one. Hope he banked it all before he started spending it. I wonder what he pays Becker? By the way he has a gluten free diet.

The LPGA ladies have the Taiwan Championship at the Miramar Golf Club. PGA has the US Tour matches over in Las Vega.

The Wonderful World of Breeding (Part 2 of 4) - Firing Blanks?

Can you imagine paying out over £6,000,000 for a yearling sired by an in fashion stallion, putting it into training, and then find out it is so slow it can’t be put on a race course and to add insult to injury find out it is also a dud when it comes to stud duties being sterile! His sire was Northern Dancer.

                      

No I can’t imagine either but it happened to the owner of Snaafi Dancer. You just cannot tell what nature will do despite human intervention to improve stock through breeding.

I decided to take an excursion into the subject of breeding. Lots of good things to read about, nice winners from different stallions and dams but I also came across the not so good as regards inbreeding. Some of what I read does make one wonder.

I went over lists of stallions at various studs and chose 6 I remember from their racing days in the UK. I was somewhat taken aback at the sirings? (Is that a permitted word?). All had either one or more lines that went back Galileo, Sadlers Wells, and Northern Dancer. Northern Dancer appearing more than once. I realised blood stock lines would need a lot of time and research to figure it all out. A life time might not be enough!

I then meandered over to the USA. 400,000 race horses end their careers every year. So where do they end up? Only a fraction got re-trained; eventing, dressage, hunting.

I am going to take a look at both these factors another time. Watch this space for what I find.

Rugby Native Plays

Our home nations all play this week-end for a place in the semi finals of the Rugby World Cup. The Red Dragon, The Thistle and The Clover join South Africa, New Zealand, France, Argentina and Australia in the quarter finals. No guessing for whom I support. Saturday at 4pm I will be glued to the TV. check out times and venue of all the matches on the BBC Sports web site.

Tennis on the Bounce

The latest, Murray beat Berdych 6-1, 6-3 in the Shanghai Open quarter finals and Djokovic beat Tomic, 7-6 6-1.

Nadal played a blinder beating Wawrinka 6-2, 6-1. and Tsonga beat Anderson 6-7, 7-5, 6-4  his place and plays Tsonga in the semi finals. It is so good to see Nadal playing his top game again.

In the ladies Hong Kong Open the last 8 have reached their quarter finals.

Great Brit’s Heather Watson went out to Stosur (seeded 5). With no ranking herself Watson has done really well to reach the quarter finals and go out to a player ranked at no. 5. The other matches are later today.

Cricket on the Wicket

Pakistan has 523 runs, England have 250. Looks like an exciting match. Cricket evolved in England back in 1598 at the time of Elizabeth 1^st, lofty beginnings indeed. Here is the England team a little later on a tour of the USA in 1859. 

 Boxing in the Ring and with Brush

Michael Conlan of Belfast has become the Bantamweight World Amateur Champion and is now heading for Rio.  Super-heavyweight Jo Joyce is heading in the same direction. Taking medal positions in European boxing and at the Commonwealth Games he says boxing comes first behind his other passion, art.  He has a degree in fine art from Middlesex University.

Snooker the Bazooka

Ronnie the Rocket O’Sullivan has decided not to take part and defend his title in the Champion of Champions match play next November. No reason has been given.

Rory McCloud, ranked 61 in world snooker took the Ruhr Open at Mulheim in Germany beating Tian Pengfei, ranked 70, 4-2.

The Haining Open starts on Monday 19^th. £70,000 total prize money, with £13,500 to the winner. It is closely followed in Danqing, China on 25^th October 2015 by the International Championship. This brings £657,000 in prize money, £125,000 to the winner.

F1 Round the Bend

Rosberg needs to quit his whining. Red Bull need an engine to remain in F1 next year and McLaren say reserve F1 driver Kevin Magnussen will go at the end of the season. Magnussen has other possibilities but has to wait till the end of the season to find out who will sign him up. (All according to Autosport).

Lewis visited the set of ‘The Martian’ and released a picture of it. I watched the movie during this last week - great movie. Very entertaining film. Lewis also, according to the Daily Express, got on stage to sing at an after party night club gig.  Rock on Lewis.

Formula 1 Heroes

Salary Work Out.

It is very difficult to blog about Formula 1 without attention on two things, the danger drivers face and the salary they receive year on year.

Would you risk your life for £371,000 a year? That was Jules Bianchi’s salary in 2014 according to www.crash.net What price do you put on a drivers life, how do you work it out?

Contracts list out what a driver must do but how do you work out the a monetary assessment for danger and death? I have no idea. Some F1 web sites list driver earnings for 2015; Alonso  £25,850,000, Vettle £20,680,000, Hamilton £18,460,000 and Rosberg £9,971,000. But what about possible injury and health bills.

                    

Health and Wealth - Schumacher

I suspect his family would give all of Michael's purported wealth of well over £300'000,000  to reverse the results of his skiing accident or any race accident that left him in a similar condition for that matter.

His charitable works are numerous which balances out controversial driving incidents. Is he a hero?  I would say so. We will, I hope see him in public again one day. Here is a picture of the Benetton he drove to his first Championship in 1994.

                          

With future work on safety to ensure no more deaths like Jules Bianchi’s we will see our race drivers enjoying life in their years off the track - Just like our very own British retired racing drivers Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill both of whom are my heroes.

THE SEASONS FINALE

Ascot Champions Day 17.10.15 - The Best of the Best

The flat season finishes on Saturday with an enormous £1.3 million in prize money and in my opinion the very best racing of the season. Would I miss it, not on your life.

Frankie is in action again at with 5 rides. Am I favouring Frankie? You betya! Silverstre de Sousa may be the winning jockey by number of wins but Frankie’s strike rate is higher over the whole season. Ryan Moore beats both of them with 28% over the last 14 days. Bit of a conundrum in betting circles?

Frankel won his last race here the QIPCO Champion Stakes 2012, his half brother Noble Mission taking the honours in 2014. Yet again Northern Dancer, Saddlers Wells and Galileo make an appearance in their blood lines with Northern Dancer on the dam’s side as well. I find this quite mind boggling in terms of who bred what, where, and out of whom. Nice game to play but I don’t have time. Too busy writing blogs!

Cheltenham

Cheltenham Race Course has announced the opening of its new Grand Stand. It will be opened by The Princess Royal on 13^th November 2015. Great timing for the 2015-2016 jump season.

A History Lesson

National Hunt Racing begins usually in late October and runs to the following April, but, where did the name ‘National Hunt Racing’ come from.

Hunting? Steeples? What do they have to do with it. Being an historian I decided to dig a bit and find out.  The name ‘National Hunt’ comes from Ireland. Two horse races were run between to points with country side obstacles in between, just like you find when you go hunting.  As for steeplechasing, those were races run over the countryside traversing all sorts of obstacles on the way between two towns and their church steeples. Point to Point races are amateur steeplechases usually run on farm land.

Phar Lap : Remember him? His hide is mounted and displayed in the Melbourne Museum. His skeleton is in the Museum of New Zealand, his heart is stored in the Mitchell annex in Australia. (Yuk all-round)

Golf Hero Series (No 1 of 4)

Golf hero: A species of golf player who is a hero, male or female. Or is it?

So who are the heroes? Presenters are, always there, calm slow paced, maintaining silence when they should and creating a lovely relaxed atmosphere for the armchair watchers. Maybe it’s the public out there walking miles and miles in the sunshine, rain and wind to follow their favourite players.

Is it the camera men or production crew stuck out there in all weathers? Some of them after all might not appreciate golf and finding it boring.  Could it be the grounds men and women and club officials that run those auspicious events?

Is it home audiences creating viewing figures that pull in millions in revenue for the tournament organisers?

Something else gets my vote. Boxed by the dozen or cosy in the golf bag pockets they wait patiently to be sent with an almighty wjack up the fairway into a dark hole - it’s the golf ball. It even has celebrity status.

It was James Bond’s golf ball of choice in the movie Goldfinger in 1964.

With 754,000 club members whacking millions of balls in the UK on any of 3000 golf courses the golf ball gets my vote.

Only in America

According to one source US citizens lose 300,000,000 of the little blighters every year. How on earth do you count lost balls! You can’t even see them to count them. Definitely only in America.
