Manchester City dropped from first to third in the Premier
League after drawing 1-1 for the third home league match in succession. Marten
de Roon equalised for Middlesbrough in stoppage time.
Chelsea were first to take over in top spot as they thrashed
Everton 5-0 in the Saturday evening match. The Blues produced what is being
hailed as one of the great Premier League performances against a team who had
only conceded eight goals all season prior to the match. Eden Hazard scored
twice and the Belgian’s individual performance is also being spoken of as one
of the greatest in Premier League history.
Sunday then saw Liverpool brush aside Watford to go top,
winning 6-1. Sadio Mane scored twice. Liverpool are one point clear of Chelsea,
who are in turn one point ahead of City and Arsenal.
Arsenal and Tottenham are fourth and fifth respectively
after drawing 1-1 in the North London derby. Spurs are five points off the pace
despite being the only unbeaten team.
Manchester United moved up to sixth as they beat Swansea
3-1. Zlatan Ibrahimovic broke his goal drought by scoring twice. Swansea have
now not won in 10 matches.
Sunderland joined Swansea on five points at the foot of the
table after finally winning for the first time this season. Despite playing
much of the second half with 10 men, the Black Cats came from behind to beat
Bournemouth 2-1.
Hull also bagged a much needed win – their first since the
second week of the season – as they beat Southampton 2-1, although the Tigers
remain in the bottom three.
West Ham and Stoke drew 1-1, leaving the Hammers just one
point clear of the relegation zone.

Champions Leicester are also looking anxiously over their
shoulders. After losing 2-1 to West Brom, the Foxes are just two points clear
of safety. This result ended a 14-month unbeaten record on home territory for
Leicester, and saw West Brom climb above them to 11th in the table.
Burnley’s fine home record continued as a late winner from
Ashley Barnes saw them beat Crystal Palace 3-2 and move up to ninth place.
The top two in the Championship both won, with Newcastle
beating Cardiff 2-1 to stay three points clear of Brighton, who won 2-0 at
Bristol City.
Queen’s Park Rangers drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest, and
then sacked manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink after 11 months in charge. Rangers
lie 17th in the Championship table. Another struggling Championship
side making changes are Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have appointed Paul
Lambert as head coach to replace the sacked Walter Zenga.
Several non-league sides secured creditable draws against
Football League opposition in the first round of the FCA Cup. The biggest scalp
was claimed by National League side Macclesfield, who beat League One Walsall
1-0.
Jack Wilshere, on loan to Bournemouth from Arsenal, has been
recalled to the England squad for Friday’s qualifier at home to Scotland.
Tennis
Andy Murray is the first British world number one in men’s
singles since the current ranking system was introduced. Murray won his fourth
tournament in succession as he beat John Isner in the final of the Paris
Masters. The Scot has now won 20 matches in succession, and next for him is the
ATP World Tour Finals in London next week, which features Murray; Novak
Djokovic, who he replaced as number one, and the other top eight players in the
world.
Johanna Konta lost to Ukraine's
Elina Svitolina in the semi-final of the WTA Elite Trophy – the end-of-season
tournament for women players ranked between 9 and 20. Petra Kvitova eventually
won the tournament, played in Zhuhai, China.
Rugby Union
Ireland were in dreamland after beating New Zealand for the
first time, winning the match in Chicago 40-29. It also ends the All Blacks’
run of 18 straight victories – a record for a major rugby nation. Ireland
surged into a 30-8 lead early in the second half, then New Zealand fought back
to leave the match in the balance at 33-29, before Robbie Henshaw’s try sealed
it for the Irish.
Wales gave a very disappointing performance in losing 32-8
to Australia in Cardiff.
Bottom of the English Premiership, Bristol have sacked
director of rugby Andy Robinson.
Rugby League
After Scotland stunned England by leading 8-0 after 26
minutes, England finally prevailed by a margin of 38-12 to record their first
win in the Four Nations.
Cycling
Britain won five gold medals at the Track Cycling
World Cup in Glasgow: Emily Kay in the women’s
omnium; Jack Carlin, Ryan Owens and Joe Truman in the men's team sprint; Mark
Stewart, Kian Emadi-Coffin, Andrew Tennant and Oliver Wood in the men’s team
pursuit; Kay, Manon Lloyd, Emily Nelson and Eleanor Dickinson in the women’s
team pursuit; and Katie Archibald and Lloyd in the women’s madison.
