MIDWEEK SPORTS ROUNDUP: November 3rd

Football

Messi scored Barcelona's only goal
Manchester City produced a superb performance to come from behind and beat Barcelona 3-1 in the Champions League. After Lionel Messi had given Barcelona the lead, two goals from Ilkay Gundogan and one from the influential Kevin de Bruyne sealed the win for City. Pep Guardiola’s side remain second in the group and will expect to qualify for the knockout stages.

In the same group, Celtic drew 1-1 with Borussia Monchengladbach and still have hopes of finishing third in the group and qualifying for the Europa League knockout stage.

Arsenal made sure of their place in the last 16 after beating Ludogorets 3-2 in Bulgaria. Arsene Wenger’s side, who won the reverse fixture 6-0 only two weeks ago, were stunned as their opponents went 2-0 up inside 15 minutes. However, Arsenal had equalised by half-time, and a stunning goal from Mesut Ozil three minutes from time wrapped up the three points.

Leicester City missed the chance to book their place in the knockout stage as they were held 0-0 away to Copenhagen. However, the Foxes remain top of their group, and are yet to concede in four Champions League matches.

It was a hugely disappointing night for Tottenham, who lost 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen at Wembley with a very poor performance. Spurs now face the task of winning away to group leaders Monaco if they are to have a realistic chance of making the last 16.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will be banned from the dugout at Swansea on Sunday, after being sent to the stands for dissent during United’s match against Burnley last weekend. He has also been fined £8,000 over this issue. Mourinho must also pay another £50,000 fine for comments made about referee Anthony Taylor prior to United’s match with Liverpool.

Liverpool striker Danny Ings will miss the rest of the season after suffering his second serious knee injury in little more than a year.

Southampton are in talks with Chinese company Lander Sports Development over a possible £200 million takeover deal.

Cricket

England may be approaching the Test series in India with trepidation, given their batting problems in the recent Bangladesh series. However, the host nation have issues of their own, with three of their batsmen – Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Lokesh Rahul – all ruled out of at least the first two matches of the series with injury.

Sir Ian Botham is expected to be confirmed as chairman of Durham County Cricket Club. The county was recently relegated to division two and handed a series of points deductions for the 2017 season, as part of a deal in which it received financial assistance from the England and Wales Cricket Board.

England Women start a one-day series in Sri Lanka on Wednesday next week. Fran Wilson has been recalled to the squad, but key pace bowler Anya Shrubsole remains absent with injury. Young spin bowler Sophie Ecclestone misses the tour due to education commitments.

Rugby Union

Two of the home nations start their autumn international programme this weekend. Wales say that the Scarlets trio of Liam Williams, Scott Williams, and Jake Ball could all still play, despite suffering recent injuries. Alun Wyn Jones will be absent for family reasons.

Ireland meanwhile face the daunting task of trying to stop New Zealand’s 17-match winning run.

Tennis

Andy Murray won his first two matches at the Paris Masters to extend his unbeaten run to 16 matches. Murray, who could become the world’s number one this week, found Fernando Verdasco a tough second round opponent though, before coming through in three sets.

Boxing

Britain’s Anthony Joshua will defend his IBF world heavyweight title against Eric Molina, of the United States, in Manchester on December 10. The WBA has also confirmed that its super world heavyweight crown, recently vacated by Tyson Fury, will also be at stake.
