Novak is king. The Chinese Open final  in Beijing saw a battle royal between Djokovic and Nadal although the score line doesn’t quite reflect that 6-2 6-2.Nadal is definitely on the mend and on the way up.

                                                                      Murray, Federer, Djokovic and Nadal are now headed for the Shanghai Open. Murray gets a bye in the first round.  If he wins in round 2 it is likely he will play David Goffin in round 3. Goffin is his opposition in the Davis Cup in November. Go for it Murray, knock him flat.

The British No. 1 Johanna Konta reached the semi finals in Wuan but got knocked out during the qualifying rounds of the ladies championship in Liez France. The top qualifying ladies be looking to make their finals in Singapore.

Horse Racing

Aidan O’brien 

Aidan O’brian did it again with Air Force Blue in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. O’brien - 1,  Godolphin - 0. Air Force Blue’s 3 Group 1 wins have been a treat to watch.  Aiden surely knows a good one when he sees one.

There was high praise on The Morning Line for Emotionless with a short presentation which took place in his stable. Emotionless certainly looked the part. High coat shine, (made one think of the Karate Kid polishing his sponsor’s car with wax, ha ha), lovely temperament, confirmation of a winner and looking very very fit. DNA and a winning quality came out in Air Force Blue. Who’s DNA?  Northern Dancer! Air Force Blue flew through the air, (pun intended). 


Formula One

All eyes are on Mr. diamonds in his ears blondy Lewis now. What a race. Everything in it an F1 fan could possibly hope for. Great start, crash in the first circuit and 3 cars out of it. We get to lap 7 and Rosberg’s throttle foot pedal breaks who caused that then? Someone in the garage needs to own up.  Roseburg was very tight lipped about it afterwards, no expletive deletives. He gets 10 out of 10 for that, any chance of the world title gone, I would not have been so sweet mouthed about it. 

Lap 12 and now Grosjean is out with a crash and out comes the safety car. Bottas’s tyres die but later he battles it out with Raikkonen circuit after circuit. Sainz goes out due to brake failure Ricciardo pulls off the track, and in the last lap, Raikkonen takes out Bottas on the very last lap
trying to beat him to third place on the podium and Vettle ends up second having carefully avoided a track  official who had run out to pick up debris of the track. Close encounter of the Sochi kind!

No 5 ring a bell? Nigel won the championship 5 times and carried the no. 5 on his helmet.

His offspring have won more major stake races than the offspring of any other sire. They also won the most money. In Europe he sired 147 stakes winners. In the UK his most famous offspring is Nijinsky who took the Triple Crown and then Nijinsky himself sired 155 stake/Group winners.

Following his line you find the undefeated Lammatarra taking the 1995 Epsom Derby, The King Geroge VI and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Northern Dancer suffered colic and was humanely put down in 1990 aged 29. Nijinsky was also humanely put down in 1992 due to “infirmities of old age’ and laminitis.

Gone they may be but their blood lines continue to excite us on the race tracks around the world. Long may they reign.

Tattershalls and Frankel

Frankel’s offspring sold at Tattersalls Book 1 sale over three days but the price they went for was well below expectation. On the other hand was the expectation way to high, he is after all an unproved stallion. One of his colts went for 750,000gns whilst colt out of Galileo sold for 1.25m gns.

When his first progeny hit the tracks next year we will see what we see. Last June one of his foals sold for 1,15 millions. Lets not forget though that Northern Dancer the leading sire in Great Britain appears on both

sides of Frankel’s blood lines.

How does Lewis relax a few days before his next big race. By going to the fashion shows in Paris of course, where else would he go.

Lewis Hamilton is headed for the World Championship with only 5 more races to go, Russia - this weekend, USA, Mexico, Brazil and finally Abu Dabi. He has 277 points and his nearest rival, Rosberg 229. 2^nd on the grid for Russia passing Rosberg is the target.

Whispers continue as to who may be driving for whom next year, and indeed which manufacturers and engine makers will still be left standing with cars to take part in 2016.

Jenson Buttons has said he is staying with McLaren. Groshean is going to race for the new American F1 team ‘HASS’. Redbull is divorcing from Renault, Mercedes won’t pay ball quite, and Ferrari have neither confirmed or otherwise about an engine for them.

Helmutt Marko has said there is another option. Not to be in F1 next year, other options? May be Red Bull will bring out a kiddie car. Remember, the ones with pedals you pushed back and forth with your feet. No? I guess buying bits from here and there might work. Bernie is on the run!

Tennis- The Chinese Open:

Raffers made it to the last 8 standing , He beat Jack Sock 3-6  6-4 6-3. His next match is against Fabio Fognini who put him out of the US Open earlier in the year.  Nadal has not made it to a semi final for almost a year so I hope his injuries and operations are all in the past and he really his prowess when on top form will surely see him in the finals.

The ladies Chinese Open has progressed to the semi finals. Muguuza will play Radwanska and Ivanovic plays Bacsinszky. You can watch matches live on the official WTA web site. Grand Slam Thank You Mam.

Djokovic is doing it again in the Chinese Open with Raffers also making it through to the quarter finals, chasing $3,944,715 in prize money. I would imagine though their thoughts are on ball, racket and court rather than the amount they win. Both are already worth a fortune.  Djokovic, Murray, Federer and Wawrinka have qualified for it. As tournaments around the world play out the points awarded might also see Berdych, Nishikori, Nadal and Ferrer in the top 8 to make the O2 arena final round robin.

In the women’s Chinese Open Miss Q. Wang who is from China went out in the 2^nd round.  Those going on to the 3^rd round are chasing after $4,720,380 in prize money which is more than the men for a change. They surely deserve it often pulling in more spectators than the men at many tournaments, a point made by Billy Jean King who started a women’s lib in tennis in 1973. She had 39 grand slam titles to her name when she retired.

Snooker:

Women’s lib has also recently entered the snooker world, for many years a men only activity.  Micheala Tab is pursuing a case of breach of contract   and unfair dismissal. She refereed 2 world finals and was the first woman to referee a ranking tournament at the 2002 Welsh Open. Watch this space folks, I will pursue this one.

Meantime the men are playing in the Ruhr tournament in Germany having begun with 239 players to whittle down to the last two in the final. The first round consists of the best of 7 frames.

But back to the tennis:

The Junior Men’s Davis Cup Champions are Canada and the Junior Ladies Davis Cup Champions are The Czech Republic. Hearty congratulations to all concerned. The Canadian youngsters beat Germany 2-1 in the final and the Czech youngsters beat the USA 2-1.

EURO 2016 QUALIFYING MATCH PREVIEWS – THURSDAY OCTOBER 8 – TUESDAY OCTOBER 13

The qualifying stages of Euro 2016 conclude this week. For all but the five-team Group I, there are two matches left for each nation. The top two in each group progress to the finals in France, as does the best third placed team. The other eight third placed finishers will play-off for four remaining spots.

GROUP A

With the finals expanded to 24 teams, Netherlands were surely certain to progress? The reality has been rather different. Czech Republic and Iceland have already secured the two automatic qualification spots from this group, and Netherlands’ hopes of claiming a play-off spot will end if Turkey secure four points from their last two matches - they will then finish third and there will be nothing the Dutch can do. In any case, two wins for the Netherlands are imperative, firstly against Kazakhstan (away) and then at home to the Czechs.

GROUP B

Wales and Belgium will surely secure their places in the top two as both play Andorra in this series of matches. Israel can finish third by claiming four points from matches against Cyprus at home and Belgium away. Anything less could open the door for Bosnia, and Cyprus are mathematically still in contention.

GROUP C

Spain, Slovakia and Ukraine will be the top three, but in what order will they finish? With a home match against Belarus and a trip to Macedonia, Slovakia should be confident of automatic qualification, which would leave Ukraine in the play-off place. Spain need only two points from two matches to qualify automatically.

GROUP D

Four teams remain in contention here. None has qualified so far, although Germany are just one point away from securing their place in the finals. Poland will qualify with four points from a trip to Scotland and a home match with Ireland, or with just three points from the Ireland match. Unless Poland slip up, Ireland will be forced to settle for third. Scotland’s hopes of sneaking into third now appear remote.

GROUP E

While England fans will be asking if their side can complete the group with a 100% record, Switzerland will be hoping they can claim second by taking four points from San Marino at home and Estonia away. Anything less could let in Slovenia, who play Lithuania at home and San Marino away. Estonia, currently fourth, could get into the play-offs with two wins.

GROUP F

Northern Ireland top this group, where again no one has qualified so far. Their place in France will be secure if they can get two points from Greece at home and/or Finland away. If Hungary can beat the Faroes at home and then Greece away, then they could knock Romania out of second place. Finland still have an outside chance of third.

  

GROUP G

Austria are the clear leaders, but Sweden are just two points behind second placed Russia, with Montenegro only one behind Sweden. All three could yet finish second, and Russia host Montenegro in the final round.

GROUP H

Leaders Italy are just one point away from qualification. Croatia will be hoping to close a two point gap on second placed Norway, and with the Scandinavian side travelling to Italy in the last match (after a (home match with Malta), they may fancy their chances. Croatia play Bulgaria at home and then Malta away.

GROUP I

In the only five team group, Portugal, Denmark and Albania will finish as the top three, but in what order? Portugal need just one point from the Denmark match, or a win over Serbia, to be certain of qualification. Albania, with two to play, will qualify with a maximum points haul from Serbia at home and Armenia away. Denmark have only the one match left and may need to win to avoid the play-offs.

AT HIS BEST - and I don’t necessarily mean the jockey.

Longchamp, Arc day. Beautiful weather, fast track, hype 100% over the top and several ways to make history. History for the jockeys, history for the horses, history for the trainers and history for the owners all awaited with bated breath.  Add in the atmosphere of the race goers and one can only say, “What a day to remember”.

I will leave it to all the racing papers, Youtube uploads, Channel 4 racing replays and web site hot spots as to what happened when and by whom as the day progressed culminating in Golden Horn’s win.

Bless you Frankie for such a wonderful day and the carriage ride to the prize giving. What a shame Golden Horn wasn’t led over there or attached to the carriage for all to see. We just got a shot of him being led away red horse rug rippling with his movements back to the stables. Not an admirer in sight. May be next year at Chantilly we will see the horse at the prize giving.

And just for fun this is a bridge designed to cross it by one of the worlds greatest ever engineers, Leonardo De Vinci. All his instructions are written as if in mirror image ie back to front. 

Perhaps Golden Horn’s prodigy will start a new line of names using  Leonardo.

So, hats off to Golden Horn in the first instance and everyone else in the second. Chantilly is where to go in 2016 and we await the changes at Longchamp with much anticipation.

A Word on Channel 4 Racing.

The Morning Line has in the past always been a good way to see what is what for the days racing. It is a shame that the producers continue to throw a shadow over it which isn’t just putting me off, I am starting to switch off.

The preamble to the Arc de Triomphe was a triumph for the people who created it. Factual, with excellent graphics and film creations, trainer and horse coverage was second to none. Presenter voiceovers could be heard, crowd response and audible racing noise to the fore helped make the lead up atmosphere really come alive.

This is sadly the opposite to Saturday morning efforts on Channel 4 on their racing preambles. We get lots of race replays however they are accompanied by over powering music and the race noise, race commentary and/or the presenters voice can’t be heard. I want to hear the race noise and what the presenter is saying if you don’t mind. Such loud music is so distracting, what I ask, is the point of it please? I don’t even want to watch The Morning Line anymore.

If anyone out there agrees let Channel 4 Racing know, use twitter and voice your complaint.

Rugby:

Not England’s finest hour 13-33 to the Wallabies : The red rose of Lancaster will live to play another day but not in this world cup. I Hope the audience attendance stays way up for the rest of the matches though.  Lets see how it all pans out now for Scotland and Wales. 

Formula 1:

Well done Lewis, Japan loves you. Next its the Russians in two weeks time. Lewis is now 48 points ahead of Roseburg. Some of the fans go wild at the Suzuka track. Ferrari samurai.

Tennis:

The Wuhan Open

Venus Williams is in the lime light this time. At 6-3 3-0 her opponent Garbine Muguruza pulled out with an injury to her ankle.  We now move on to Beijing for the Chinese Open.

Sunday Entertainment:

Today (Sunday am) is the day of the Arc de Triumphe. Treve verses all the others. Golden Horn is supplemented to the tune of 120,000 euros but there are plenty of other challengers to thwart either of them. Place your bets in good time but remember the betting rules in France are not the same as here.

From Over The Pond:

I find it hard to imagine anyone not following horse racing but for those who are board stiff by it - the Americans are here, their football players that is. All hail their version of rugby. The Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets are on this Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

I was lucky enough to watch a live match back in the 70’s sandwiched between two football scouts. (They head hunt players) They taught me the rules as the match unfolded, Boston Patriots v Chicago Bears. Great game, shouted and stomped with the best of them.

The Patriots kicker, was a Welshman, and yes his name was Williams. Those pesky red dragons get everywhere don’t they. A kicker only comes on the field when there is a kicking situation and when done he leaves the field.  He has to kick the ball between the goal posts similar to a rugby goal conversion. American Football does have skills and spills and I must admit I quit liked it watching. Coverage is on BBC 2 from 2pm.

St.Andrews

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the Old Course at St Andrews (part of The European Tournament fixtures)is moving forward to the cut but mean time celebrity golf is in the news.

Radio DJ Chris Evans will no longer be able to play in the Celebrity Alfred Dunhill Championship. He is barred - forever. Shenanigans have emerged over handicaps used when he won last year. The organisers however have not given a full explanation as yet.

Tennis News & Bouncing Balls

To begin: An Only in China Item:

Tennis fans in Beijing  gathered together to have a go at the Readers Digest record for the highest number of tennis players bouncing their balls all at the same time. 767 fans bounced balls on their tennis racquets, This was a game of how many rather than how long for.

Unfortunately there is no film of this right now, when I find a film of it I will give you the link.

To More Serious Things:

The Wuhan Women’s Tennis Tournament.

This tournament is well under way. Wuhan, which is a 13 hour drive south of Beijing, has seen several scalps being taken already to both injury and good tennis play.

Crowds will be disappointed that Serina Williams pulled out due to the injuries sustained by a physically punishing schedule over the past few months and the next scalp to go was Maria Sharapova also due to sustained injuries.

The next few scalps were down to great play. The new British No 1. Johanna Konta not only gave Simona Halep a great run for her money but finally won the match 6-3 3-6 7-5.  Konta however was not so lucky in her next match playing against Serina’s sister Venus Williams. Venus took her next tournament scalp beating Konta with a match win of 6-4 3-6 7-5.

The first semi final is now between Venus Williams USA and Roberta Vinci of Italy and no apologies for noticing but with a name like that she has to be Italian, (Leonardo I hope you are looking down on her and wishing her well). The second semi is between Muguruza Blano of Spain v Angelique Kerber of Germany.

Doubles quarter final matches are moving along with expected results panning out.

The Chan sisters play Joerges/Pliskova.

Favourites Hingis and Mirza play Kops-Jones and Spears.

Lots of different countries are represented here Romania, Spain, Czechoslovakia, Canada, Poland, India, Switzerland, Germany, China and last but not least the USA. It is a great variety. It is also good to see the variety of seeded players making it through to the semi finals as it adds spice to the proceedings. The final will be a much awaited contest especially as the Chinese Open begins in Beijing immediately after the Wuhan final.

Women players are certainly working hard for all that lovely money they earn on the circuit.  See you all in Beijing! 3-11th October. The prize money at that tournament is over £3,146,920, which therefore is nice work if you can get it.

The men get their chance to demonstrate their prowess in the men’s Chinese Open from the 5^th October to the 11^th overlapping with the women at the same venue, the Beijing Olympic Park. The usual top players are taking part in front of Chinese audiences now thoroughly in love with international tennis. It won’t be long I am sure before we see both Chinese men and women taking their place at the top of the rankings.
