WEEKEND SPORTS ROUNDUP:

Football

The three sides who went into the weekend level on points at the top of the Premier League all won and all scored four goals in the process.

Manchester City returned to winning ways as two goals from Sergio Aguero and two more from Ilkay Gundogan saw them beat West Brom 4-0.

Arsenal produced three late goals to see off bottom-placed Sunderland 4-1, with Alexis Sanchez netting twice and Olivier Giroud scoring with each of his first two touches after being introduced as a substitute.

Crystal Palace twice equalised the first half, before Liverpool ran out 4-2 winners at Selhurst Park.

Two goals, and a 2-0 win, was enough for Chelsea to remain one point behind the top three.

Tottenham however slipped three points off the pace and remain fifth after a 1-1 draw with Leicester, despite being the only unbeaten team. They had 22 attempts on goal but had only a Vincent Janssen penalty to show for their efforts.

Manchester United meanwhile drew 0-0 with Burnley despite having 37 goal attempts. Burnley ‘keeper Tom Heaton, once of United, was in superb form, and as the Red Devils’ frustration grew, there were sendings off for Ander Herrera and for manager Jose Mourinho. United have now won just one of their last seven league matches.

Sunderland remain rooted to the bottom of the table, but West Ham and Hull remain in trouble after defeats by Everton and Watford respectively.

Championship leaders Newcastle won 2-1 at Preston, and Brighton are now second after thrashing Norwich 5-0.

Celtic won 1-0 at Aberdeen to stay nine points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Cricket

Bangladesh won an extraordinary second Test in Dhaka to record their first ever win over England in the five-day format, and square the two-match series at 1-1. Chasing 273 to win, Alastair Cook (59) and Ben Duckett (56) put on 100 for the first wicket, before the side crumbled to 164 all out. All the wickets therefore fell for just 64 runs in a single session of play after tea on the third day. Teenage off-spinner Mehedi Hasan followed up his five-wicket haul on debut with six wickets in each innings here.

Earlier in the match, Bangladesh made 220 in the first innings, having reached 171-1 via 104 from Tamim Iqbal and 66 from Mominul Haque. Moeen Ali took five wickets for England. England replied with 244 to claim a first innings lead, but only after Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid had added 99 for the ninth wicket. Imrul Kayes top scored with 78 in the Bangladesh second innings to lead his side to 296 and set up a thrilling fourth innings.

England now start a five-match Test series in India on November 9, and former captain Michael Vaughan has suggested England could lose that series 5-0 if they display the same poor batting as has been on show in Bangladesh.

Motor Racing

Lewis Hamilton won the Mexican Grand Prix, ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, and in doing so trimmed Rosberg’s lead in the Formula One world championship to 19 points. There are two Grands Prix remaining for Hamilton to try and pull off an unlikely title win – in Brazil on November 13 and in Abu Dhabi two weeks later.

Rugby Union

The top three in the Premiership all won, with leaders Saracens winning 24-10 at home to fourth-placed Leicester. Second placed Wasps had little difficulty with Newcastle, recording a 31-6 victory, but third placed Bath required a try with the last play of the match to beat Exeter 13-10. Sale moved within one point of the top four after a 31-13 win at bottom of the table Bristol.

Northampton beat Gloucester 23-20 and Harlequins were 36-14 winners against Worcester.

Rugby League

England were edged out 17-16 by New Zealand in the opening match of their Four Nations campaign. England have reached the final on both previous occasions that this tournament has been staged in England, but they now face an uphill battle to repeat that this time around.

Tennis

Andy Murray won his seventh title of the year, and his third in succession, when he beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. If he wins next week’s Paris Masters and Novak Djokovic fails to make the final, Murray will take over as world number 1 even before the ATP Tour Finals in London later in November.

Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia beat world number 1 Angelique Kerber in the final of the WTA Finals tournament in Singapore.

PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS – 29/31 OCTOBER

Sunderland v Arsenal – Saturday 1230
Positions: Sunderland 20th, Arsenal 2nd

Form (league matches only – earliest matches first):
Sunderland LLLDLL (1pt)
Arsenal WWWWWD (16pts)

  • This is almost a bottom v top match, with Arsenal unbeaten since the first day and level on points with the leaders, and with Sunderland still searching for a win, even after playing two sides from the bottom six in their last two matches. All runs of form, good or bad, end at some stage, but Arsenal must be strongly fancied here.

Manchester United v Burnley – Saturday 1500
Positions: Man Utd 7th, Burnley 14th

Form:

Man Utd LLWDDL (5pts)
Burnley DLWLLW (7pts)

  • Manchester United finally secured a win over a weakened Manchester City in the League cup, but their Premier League record of one win in six is far from impressive. They also go into this fixture on the back of a 4-0 humbling at Chelsea. However, Burnley are yet to gather a point on their travels since their return to the top flight, and a United victory is still the most likely result. United’s Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly starts a two-month lay-off with a knee injury.

Middlesbrough v Bournemouth – Saturday 1500
Positions: Middlesbrough 17th, Bournemouth 12th

Form:
Middlesbrough LLLDLD (2pts)
Bournemouth WLWDWD (11pts)

  • Bournemouth are another team with a much better record at home than on their travels. The Cherries have won three of the last six, but all at home, and despite their own poor run of results, Middlesbrough will be looking to take at least a point from this fixture.

Tottenham Hotspur v Leicester City – Saturday 1500
Positions: Tottenham 5th, Leicester 12th

Form:

Tottenham WWWWDD (14pts)
Leicester LWLDLW (7pts)

  • Leicester were praised for their performance against Crystal Palace last week, but once again they leave the home comforts of their King Power Stadium for life on the road, and they have lost all four away matches so far while shipping 13 goals in the process. Tottenham are down to fifth after drawing the last two, but it hardly represents a slide in form, and they remain one point off the pace and should probably be marginal favourites for three points here.

Watford v Hull City – Saturday 1500
Positions: Watford 9th, Hull 18th

Form:

Watford WWLDWD (11pts)
Hull DLLLLL (1pt)

  • Hull are a club looking for anything they can draw comfort from, after losing their last five league matches and conceding 19 goals in the process. Hull did manage to record a win in the League Cup in midweek – against Championship opposition – and they only lost to Stoke last week thanks to two superb goals. Watford are also one of the few teams to have had significantly better results in away matches so far, so if this is to be anything other than a very hard season for Hull, this is the sort of fixture they need to target for some points.

West Bromwich Albion v Manchester City – Saturday 1500
Positions: West Brom 13th, Man City 1st

Form:

West Brom LWDDDL (6pts)
Man City WWWLDD (11pts)

  • Manchester City are certainly on a poor run by their standards, or the standards of any team Pep Guardiola has managed. They have not won in six matches in all competitions, have failed to keep a clean sheet in eight and have conceded the first goal of the game in all of their last six. However, the poor run has coincided with a series of fixtures against stronger opposition, and with West Brom themselves having not won in four league matches, City will start as favourites here.

Crystal Palace v Liverpool - Saturday 1730
Positions: Crystal Palace 11th, Liverpool 3rd

Form:
Crystal Palace WWWDLL (10pts)
Liverpool WWWWDW (16pts)

  • Liverpool’s excellent run of form continues, and they are now level on points with Manchester City and Arsenal at the top. With Palace’s good start to the season fading somewhat, Jurgen Klopp’s side will be confident of another win here.

Everton v West Ham United – Sunday 1330
Positions: Everton 6th, West Ham 15th

Form:
Everton WWLDDL (8pts)
West Ham LLLDWW (7pts)

  • On the field at least, things seem to be looking up for West Ham, after back-to-back league wins and victory over Chelsea in the League Cup. After a superb start, Everton have not won in four, so the momentum is with the Hammers. However, maybe Everton’s defensive solidity will see them claim at least a point.

Southampton v Chelsea – Sunday 1600
Positions: Southampton 8th, Chelsea 4th

Form:
Southampton LWWDWD (11pts)
Chelsea DLLWWW (10pts)

  • Chelsea are really hitting form, having won their last three league matches 2-0, 3-0 and 4-0. However, Southampton are themselves in great form, so a 5-0 Chelsea win to continue the sequence has to be regarded as most unlikely. In what could be one of the weekend’s most exciting matches, both teams look full of goals, so perhaps a score draw is on the cards?

Stoke City v Swansea City – Monday 2000
Positions: Stoke 16th, Swansea 19th

Form:
Stoke LLDDWW (8pts)
Swansea DLLLLD (2pts)

  • Stoke have recorded back-to-back wins and are unbeaten in four. Now outside the relegation zone, the Potters will fancy their chances of securing another three points against a Swansea side who have not won since the first day of the season.

MIDWEEK SPORTS ROUNDUP: October 27th

Football

United got the better of rivals City
Manchester United received a timely boost as they put aside their poor league form to beat Manchester City 1-0 in a derby match in the round of 16 of the EFL Cup. Both sides made changes but United’s starting line-up always looked stronger on paper, and after an error-strewn first half, United took charge in the second and bagged the winner with a Juan Mata strike.

Despite more crowd trouble at the Olympic Stadium, West Ham had another excellent win to celebrate as they progressed to the last eight with a 2-1 win over Chelsea.

Southampton’s record signing Sofiane Boufal scored a superb goal as the Saints beat Sunderland 1-0.

A Daniel Sturridge double saw Liverpool to a 2-1 win over Tottenham.

Championship leaders Newcastle continued their superb season by thrashing Preston 6-0. Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mohammed Diame both scored twice, with five of the goals coming after Preston had been reduced to ten men. Preston must face the challenge of another match against Newcastle in the league this Saturday.

Another player scoring twice was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, as Arsenal beat Reading 2-0.

Hull were no doubt grateful to be able to forget about their Premier League difficulties for one night, and they duly progressed to the last eight with a 2-1 win over Championship side Bristol City. No top flight team lost to lower division opposition in this round of matches.

The quarter-final line up is completed by Leeds, who won 3-2 in the only penalty shoot-out of the round, after finishing 2-2 with Norwich after extra time.
The quarter-final draw is: Liverpool v Leeds, Manchester United v West Ham, Hull v Newcastle, Arsenal v Southampton. Matches to be played on November 29 and 30.
Away from the EFL Cup, Celtic produced three late goals as they beat Ross County 4-0, and now stand seven points clear of second placed Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership, and also have a game in hand on the chasing pack.

After a creditable 0-0 draw with France, England Women beat Spain 2-1 in their latest friendly international. Mark Sampson’s side are now unbeaten in nine matches and must be among the favourites to win Euro 2017.

Cricket

After winning the first Test, England could make changes for the second encounter with Bangladesh, which starts in Dhaka on Friday. Pace bowlers Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes could be rested, with Steve Finn and Jake Ball in line to replace them, while Zafar Ansari could make his debut as the third spin bowling option in place of Gareth Batty. Despite losing early wickets in both innings of the first match, England are set to stick with the same top four batsmen.

England have confirmed that the same squad of 16 will be on duty for the forthcoming series in India, meaning there is no recall for Alex Hales, who opted out of touring Bangladesh due to security concerns. James Anderson is reported to have only an outside chance of being fit to return by the time of the third match of the India series.

Rugby Union

England coach Eddie Jones has suggested that Northampton’s Teimana Harrison and Tom Wood are both likely to play in the back row in the autumn internationals, which start with a match against South Africa on November 12. England have been beset by injuries, especially involving back row forwards.

Ireland start their campaign against New Zealand in Chicago on November 5, and have selected six uncapped players in their squad: Leinster’s Joey Carbery, Luke McGrath, Garry Ringrose and James Tracy; and Munster's Billy Holland and John Ryan. Keith Earls has been suspended from the first match, while Ian Madigan has not been selected as he now plays club rugby in France.

Chris Ashton, capped 39 times by England, has confirmed he will leave Saracens at the end of the season and join French side Toulon.

Leicester are another club to have received bad news this week, when they learned that Australian centre Matt Toomua will be sidelined for six months with a knee injury. Toomua only made his debut for the Tigers earlier this month.

Rugby League

England will host the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. 12 venues in London, the north of England and the Midlands have been lined up to stage the 31 matches in the 16-team tournament.

England start their Four Nations campaign against New Zealand this Saturday.

Tennis

Andy Murray beat Slovakia’s Martin Klizan and now faces a third-round tie against John Isner at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. With world number one Novak Djokovic not competing this week, Murray has an excellent opportunity to move closer to top spot in the rankings by winning this tournament.

WEEKEND SPORTS ROUNDUP: October 22/23

Football

Jose Mourinho endured a painful return to Stamford Bridge as Chelsea ran out 4-0 winners over Manchester United.

Chelsea are now just one point off the top of the Premier League. Manchester City remain top, but were held 1-1 at home to Southampton, and second placed Arsenal could also only draw 0-0 with Middlesbrough.

Liverpool moved level on points with the top two as they beat West Brom 2-1. Tottenham are fifth, but again only one point off the top, after drawing 0-0 at Bournemouth.

Leicester kept up their good home form with a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.

West Ham and Stoke both made it back to back wins as they seek to move away from danger. West Ham beat Sunderland 2-1 and Stoke were 2-0 winners at Hull, plunging both Sunderland and Hull into greater trouble. Between Sunderland and Hull in the bottom three lie Swansea, who could only draw 0-0 at Watford.

Burnley’s home form has also been good this year, and they will be delighted with their 2-1 win over Everton.

Newcastle lead the Championship by three points, after beating Ipswich 3-0.

Celtic beat Rangers 1-0 in the semi-final of Scotland’s League Cup, while Aberdeen joined them in the final with a 2-0 win over Morton.

Cricket

England finally emerged victorious from a nerve-racking first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong, with all-rounder Ben Stokes playing a key role. England made 293 batting first, with Moeen Ali making 68 and Jonny Bairstow 52, while 18-year-old spinner Mehedi Hasan took 6-80 on debut. Despite 78 from Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh could only reply with 248 in their first innings, with four wickets for Stokes in a lower order collapse. In their second innings, England also recovered from a bad start to post 240 (Stokes 85, Shakib Al-Hasan 5-85). This left Bangladesh 286 to win, and the match went into the fifth day well and truly in the balance at 253-8. Stokes duly produced two wickets in three balls to give England victory by 22 runs, with Bangladesh’s Sabbir Rahman left stranded on 64 not out as he watched the final wickets fall from the non-striker’s end.

The second and final Test of the series starts in Dhaka on Friday. England will again be without James Anderson, the leader of their bowling attack, whose shoulder injury will keep him out of action until at least the second Test of the forthcoming series in India.

Motor Racing

Lewis Hamilton won his first Grand Prix since July, and the 50th of his career, as he took the chequered flag in the US Grand Prix. However his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg finished second, and Rosberg still has a commanding 26 point lead in the Drivers’ Championship with only three races to go.

Rugby Union

In their first match since the death of coach Anthony Foley, Munster secured a bonus point win in the European Cup by beating Glasgow 38-17. Also in Pool A, Leicester secured their first win in the competition this year bey beating French champions Racing 92 27-17.

In Pool B, Connacht made it two wins from two by beating Zebre 52-7, while Wasps are also well placed after coming away from a tricky trip to Toulouse with a 20-20 draw.

Saracens top Pool C after beating Scarlets 44-26. England’s Maro Itoje suffered a suspected broken hand in this match, adding to Eddie Jones’ injury problems ahead of the autumn internationals. Sale suffered a second defeat after going down 15-5 at home to Toulon.

After Castres beat Northampton 41-7 and Montpelier beat Leinster 22-16, there is all to play for in Group D, with all four sides having one win and one defeat.

Ulster edged out Exeter 19-18 in Pool E, and the West Country side cannot afford any more slip ups if they are to qualify for the last eight. French side Clermont-Auvergne lead this group.

Rugby League

England warmed up for their Four Nations campaign by beating France 40-6 in Avignon.

Tennis

Johanna Konta narrowly missed out on a place in the WTA end-of-season Finals.

Kyle Edmund will have to wait for his first appearance in an ATP Tour Final after losing to Richard Gasquet in the semi-final of the European Open.

Cycling

British Olympic champion Katie Archibald won gold in both the omnium and the individual pursuit at the European Track Championships. Emily Kay and Emily Nelson won silver in the madison, as did Elinor Barker in the scratch race. Another silver came as Jack Carlin, Ryan Owens and Joseph Truman finished second in the team sprint. There were also several bronzes for Britain, including the men’s and women’s team pursuit events.

Golf

Ireland’s Padraig Harrington won his first European Tour title for eight years in the Portugal Masters, finishing one shot ahead of the 2015 winner, Andy Sullivan of Britain.

PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS – 22ND - 23RD OCTOBER

Bournemouth v Tottenham Hotspur – Saturday 1230
Positions: Bournemouth 11th, Tottenham 3rd

Form (league matches only – earliest matches first):
Bournemouth DWLWDW (11pts)
Tottenham DWWWWD (14pts)

  • Bournemouth scored six last time out to double their goals tally for the season. However, they will surely find Tottenham’s defence in less forgiving mood than Hull’s. Lewis Cook, Max Gradel and Brad Smith are all expected to miss out for the Cherries with injury once again. Although the absence of Toby Alderweireld is a blow for Spurs, Eric Dier looks a more than capable deputy in central defence.

Arsenal v Middlesbrough – Saturday 1500
Positions: Arsenal 2nd, Middlesbrough 17th

Form:
Arsenal WWWWWW (18pts)
Middlesbrough DLLLDL (2pts)

  • A meeting of a team with a perfect record in their last six league matches and a team who haven’t won in six. With Arsenal having scored 16 goals in that time, plus six in their latest European fixture, it’s difficult to see anything other than a home win here.

Burnley v Everton – Saturday 1500
Positions: Burnley 14th, Everton 6th

Form:
Burnley LDLWLL (4pts)
Everton WWWLDD (11pts)

  • Burnley have found goals difficult to come by so far, and last season’s hot shot Andre Gray remains suspended for this one. It’s hard to see Burnley having too much joy against Everton’s well organised defence.

Hull City v Stoke City – Saturday 1500
Positions: Hull 16th, Stoke 18th

Form:
Hull LDLLLL (1pt)
Stoke LLLDDW (5pts)

  • Although Hull are higher in the table than their opponents, the momentum is definitely with Stoke. Hull have now conceded 17 goals in their last four matches. Stoke meanwhile secured creditable draws with Crystal Palace and Manchester United, before recording their first win against Sunderland last week. Hull have provisionally agreed a £130 million takeover deal with a consortium from South East Asia.

Leicester City v Crystal Palace – Saturday 1500
Positions: Leicester 13th, Crystal Palace 9th

Form:
Leicester WLWLDL (7pts)
Crystal Palace DWWWDL (11pts)

  • Leicester will certainly be disappointed with their season so far. However, after last week’s defeat at Chelsea they return to their King Power Stadium, where they are unbeaten with just one goal conceded in four matches. Leicester will also be hoping to build on their latest good result in the Champions League in midweek. With Palace having lost to West Ham last week, Leicester maybe start as slight favourites.

Swansea City v Watford – Saturday 1500
Positions: Swansea 19th, Watford 10th

Form:
Swansea LDLLLL (1pt)
Watford LWWLDW (10pts)

  • Swansea showed some spirit in losing 3-2 at Arsenal, and if they can produce more of the same, this could be a chance to get their season going again.

West Ham United v Sunderland – Saturday 1500
Positions: West Ham 15th, Sunderland 20th

Form:
West Ham LLLLDW (4pts)
Sunderland DLLLDL (2pts)

  • West Ham will have been cheered by their win last weekend, and particularly by the fact they recorded a clean sheet in doing so. With Sunderland still without a win, after losing the bottom of the table clash with Stoke last week, this is an excellent opportunity for the Hammers to record a second win.

Liverpool v West Bromwich Albion – Saturday 1730
Positions: Liverpool 4th, West Brom 12th

Form:
Liverpool DWWWWD (14pts)
West Brom DLWDDD (7pts)

  • Liverpool’s goalscoring form came to an end in the goalless draw with Manchester United. Although West Brom may not have as good a defence as United’s on paper, the Baggies have shown so far that they are a difficult side to beat, and will perhaps fancy their chances of getting a point from this one.

Manchester City v Southampton – Sunday 1330
Positions: Man City 1st, Southampton 8th

Form:
Man City WWWWLD (13pts)
Southampton DLWWDW (11pts)

  • Some people are starting to see defensive frailties in the City side, after they failed to beat Tottenham or Everton in their last two league matches, and lost 4-0 to Barcelona. After threw wins and a draw in their last four matches, and with Charlie Austin in goalscoring form, Southampton may think they can get something out of this match.

Chelsea v Manchester United – Sunday 1600
Positions: Chelsea 5th, Man Utd 7th

Form:
Chelsea WDLLWW (10pts)
Man Utd WLLWDD (8pts)

  • Neither side will be totally happy with their season so far. This could be a cagey encounter, but there are plenty of players on either side who can produce a moment of magic that could break the deadlock.

MIDWEEK SPORTS ROUNDUP

Football

Barcelona beat Manchester City 4-0 in the Champions League, with Lionel Messi scoring a hat-trick. Despite the scoreline, this wasn’t a vintage Barca performance, and City made numerous costly mistakes. The Spanish club only really took charge once City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo had been sent off. City are second in their group, but only one point ahead of Borussia Monchengladbach, who beat Celtic 2-0.

Arsenal eased past Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad, with Mesut Ozil netting three times in a 6-0 win.

Tottenham had to withstand a second half onslaught before escaping with a 0-0 draw from their match away to Bayer Leverkusen. Spurs are another English side currently in the top two, but with only a one-point cushion over third place.

Leicester brushed aside their inconsistent domestic form to beat Copenhagen 1-0 and go five points clear at the top of their group.

Newcastle are now top of the Championship after a 2-0 win at Barnsley. Norwich, who are one point behind, drew 2-2 at Fulham. Long-time leaders Huddersfield slipped to fourth after losing for the third time in five matches.

Aston Villa won 2-1 at Reading to claim their first away win for over a year.

Hull are reported to have conditionally agreed a £130 million takeover by a South East Asian consortium.

Midfielder Sofiane Boufal could finally be ready to make his Southampton debut in Thursday’s Europa League match away to Inter. The Saints’ £16 million record signing has been sidelined with a knee injury so far.

Cricket

Ben Duckett became the eighth different Test opening batsman to get the chance to open for England since the retirement of Andrew Strauss. He was dismissed for just 14 in the First Test against Bangladesh that got under way on Thursday morning in Chittagong. At tea on the first day, England were 173-5, with Moeen Ali unbeaten on 61.

England Women won the deciding encounter of their five match ODI series in the West Indies. Alex Hartley took 4-24 as the West Indies were all out for 155, then Natalie Sciver’s 58 not out led the way as England got home with five wickets and 11 overs in hand.

Durham have taken another step to stabilise their financial position after the north-east county reached agreement with Durham County Council for £3.74 million of debt to be converted into shares. It is now expected that their Chester-le-Street headquarters will remain an England ODI venue, but will still lose its status as a Test ground. Sir Ian Botham is expected to become the club’s chairman.

Rugby League

Leeds forward Stevie Ward could make his international debut this weekend as England warm up for the Four Nations campaign with a match against France. Ward has replaced injured Leeds team-mate Brett Ferres in the squad.

Cycling
Katie Archibald, a team pursuit gold medalist for Team GB in Rio, won a silver medal in the women's elimination race at the European Track Championships in Paris, behind Kirsten Wild of the Netherlands.

WEEKEND SPORTS ROUNDUP:

Football

Manchester City still lead the Premier League, but only on goal difference. Pep Guardiola’s side made amazing start to the season but have now failed to win their last two matches. On Saturday they were held 1-1 at home by Everton, while Arsenal beat Swansea 3-2 to move level on points. Liverpool can also reach 19 points if they beat Manchester United on Monday night, although they would require a three-goal win to take over at the top.

Tottenham are one point behind, so by only drawing 1-1 at West Brom they missed the chance to go top.

Chelsea ensured Leicester’s away day blues continued as Alberto Conte’s side won 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. Leicester have now lost four matches, more than in their entire title winning season.

Stoke beat Sunderland 2-0 in the battle of the bottom two, and in doing so moved up to third bottom.

Highest scorers of the weekend were Bournemouth, who thrashed Hull 6-1.

Norwich still lead the Championship after beating Rotherham 3-1. Huddersfield lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday, and so Newcastle took the opportunity to grab second spot from them with a 3-1 win over Brentford.

Tennis

Andy Murray’s superb year continued as he beat Roberto Bautista Agut in the final of the Shanghai Masters, his sixth tournament win of 2016. Murray could potentially now overtake world no 1 Novak Djokovic in the rankings before the end of the year.

Cricket

England Women face a decider against their West Indies counterparts on Wednesday, with the series locked at 2-2.

In Friday’s third match of the series, England looked at last to have found some batting form, as Lauren Winfield made 79 and Natalie Sciver 58 in a total of 220. West Indies could reply with only 108.

In Sunday’s fourth match, West Indies amassed a useful total of 223-6, but England were initially well on course. Tammy Beaumont made 57, Winfield 51 and captain Heather Knight 36, and at one stage England were well placed at 133-1. However, a collapse to 181 all out followed, with five players being run out.

Rugby Union

Saracens shocked big-spending French club Toulon by beating them 31-23 in the European Champions Cup. It was Toulon’s first ever home defeat in the senior European competition.

Pro12 champions Connacht had another day to remember as they beat Toulouse 23-21.

The eye-catching results in this round of matches started on Friday night – Leicester will be extremely disappointed to have lost to Glasgow by as large a margin as 42-13.

Other results for English teams in this opening round of fixtures included a 28-11 defeat for Sale at Llanelli Scarlets, a 16-14 win for Northampton at home to Montpelier, a 35-8 defeat for Exeter at home to Clermont Auvergne and an easy 82-14 win for Wasps over Zebre.

Munster’s match against Racing 92 was postponed after the sudden death of Anthony Foley, the Irish province’s coach. The 42-year-old, who won 62 caps for Ireland, is believed to have suffered a heart attack in his Paris hotel room.

Boxing

Britain’s Tony Bellew retained his WBC world cruiserweight title in his home city of Liverpool after delivering a third round knockout to American BJ Flores.

Cycling

Mark Cavendish won the silver medal in the World Championship road race in Qatar, with Peter Sagan of Slovakia retaining his title. Lizzie Deignan (nee Armitstead) missed out on a medal in the women’s road race, finishing in fourth place.

Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky refuses to go away. Wiggins has previously been granted a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) to take a banned substance for medical reasons. However, Team Sky director Sir David Brailsford this weekend once again refused to disclose the contents of a mystery package delivered to the team during a race in France in 2011, which Wiggins won. The delivery is being investigated by UK Anti-Doping. Wiggins will be absent from today’s parade of Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic stars through the streets of Manchester.

Why Professionalism & Patience Is The Key To Success...

I'm always asked 'How can I make money from sports betting'?

The answer I give is usually frowned upon!

You see, many gamblers believe that finding a good tipster is the 'holy grail'. Of course, this is true and important.

But there is no point in following a good tipster if you yourself are not professional & patient.

Believe you me, there is no 'quick fix' to making money from sports betting quickly.

The only way to win is by being professional and using a betting bank daily. By keeping a bank set aside for the sole purpose of betting is a must. And by using a percentage of this bank daily is also a big requirement.

This is where many bettors fall down.

And why only 1.7% of regular bettors win.

Many of you I know are following our £100 to £50'000 challenge. This will take around three years to complete and believe it or not, thats to long for many bettors!

For more information on this challenge please scroll through the blog archives.

A prime example of professionalism and patience came to light yesterday...

Pro Tipster SHANE MURPHYS IRISH TIPS has been in great form in the past year. Indeed he has now made +191.14 points in this period from selective betting in Irish racing.

In this period he has a return on investment (ROI) of nearly 30%!

This means for every £100 his members have staked they have returned £130. Better than any bank or building society thats for sure!

Anyway, October hadn't been the greatest month for Shane with a number of near misses. From the 1st to 15th of the month he found himself down -24.38 points or £243.80 to £10 stakes. Not great news I'm sure you will agree.

But nevertheless nothing to be to concerned about considering members had made £1'911.40 in the past twelve months.

But as you can imagine we had a number of members leave the tipster due to a poor few weeks.

Yesterday (Sunday 16th) Shane advised five tips.

Four of them won at prices of 12/1, 11/2, 3/1 & 11/10. Typically it was the shortest priced advice of the day that let him down coming second!

But nevertheless a profit of +28.00 points was made on the day. Thats £280.00 to £10 stakes.

Suddenly the previous loss of the month was completely wiped out in one afternoon!

This is why I am taking about being professional & patient.

If using a betting bank the previous monthly loss wouldn't have really hurt, as the betting bank would have still been in a very healthy position.

And then boom!

The bettors patience & professionalism was paid off in a few hours.

This why 1.7% of bettors win and the other 98.3% lose.

So you see, the holy grail isn't just about finding a great tipster.

It's a mix of tipster, patience & professionalism.
