PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS (FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 30 – SUNDAY OCTOBER 2)

Everton v Crystal Palace – Friday 2000
Positions: Everton 5th, Crystal Palace 7th

Form (league matches only – earliest matches first):
Everton DWWWWL (13pts)
Crystal Palace LLDWWW (10pts)

  • Everton were going well until their unexpected defeat to Bournemouth, while Palace are in excellent form. However all three of their recent wins have come against teams in the bottom five, and they should find Everton’s defence is a much harder nut to crack.

Swansea City v Liverpool – Saturday 1200
Positions: Swansea 17th, Liverpool 4th

Form:
Swansea WLLDLL (4pts)
Liverpool WLDWWW (13pts)

  • Swansea appear set for another season of struggling against relegation. They are unlikely to find free-scoring Liverpool in a generous mood, and a Reds win looks highly likely.

Hull v Chelsea – Saturday 1500
Positions: Hull 14th, Chelsea 8th

Form:
Hull WWLDLL (7pts)
Chelsea WWWDLL (10pts)

  • After a fairytale start where they won their first two matches, Hull are now facing up to the realities of tackling the Premier League with a threadbare squad. Chelsea are not in great form themselves, and their performance in going down to defeat by Arsenal was especially poor, but expect Antonio Conte’s side to have the edge here.

Sunderland v West Bromwich Albion – Saturday 1500
Positions: Sunderland 20th, West Brom 10th

Form:
Sunderland LLDLLL (1pt)
West Brom WLDLWD (8pts)

  • For the fourth successive season Sunderland have reached the end of September without recording a win. Whilst they have managed to stay up on each previous occasion, you feel that sooner or later such a poor start will ultimately lead to relegation. The Black Cats have to regard this as a winnable match, but on current form they can’t be seen as favourites.

Watford v Bournemouth – Saturday 1500
Positions: Watford 11th, Bournemouth 15th

Form:
Watford DLLWWD (8pts)
Bournemouth LLDWLW (7pts)

  • Bournemouth secured an excellent win over Everton last week, but with only four goals to date this season, they remain the league’s joint lowest scoring team. If they are to make it three wins out of four here, you fancy it will be by the odd goal.

West Ham United v Middlesbrough – Saturday 1500
Positions: West Ham 18th, Middlesbrough 16th

Form:
West Ham LWLLLL (3pts)
Middlesbrough DWDLLL (5pts)

  • Two sides in desperate need of three points meet here. Middlesbrough are still struggling to adapt to life in the Premier League, but even so you have to fancy them to score here against a West Ham defence that looks positively shambolic. But if ‘Boro do score, will it be enough to win?

Manchester United v Stoke City – Sunday 1200
Positions: Man Utd 6th, Stoke 19th

Form:
Man Utd WWWLLW (12pts)
Stoke DLLLLD (2pts)

  • United got back to winning ways by scoring four in the first half against Leicester, and you have to fancy them to beat Stoke, who are the joint lowest scorers and have the second worst defensive record – never a good combination!

Leicester City v Southampton – Sunday 1415
Positions: Leicester 12th, Southampton 9th

Form:
Leicester LDWLWL (7pts)
Southampton DLDLWW (8pts)

  • Leicester are yet to beat a team from the top half of the table, and having suffered heavy defeats to Liverpool and Manchester United, questions are being asked about their defence. This time last season, Leicester were still winning despite conceding a fair number of goals, and it was only later in the season that they acquired a mean defence to complement their potent strike force. Southampton may start as favourites given they have won their last two, following a difficult start.

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City – Sunday 1415
Positions: Tottenham 2nd, Man City 1st

Form:
Tottenham DWDWWW (14pts)
Man City WWWWWW (18pts)

  • A potentially hugely exciting top of the table clash is in store. Tottenham have the best defensive record in the league and City are without the injured Kevin De Bruyne. However, City’s record of ten wins and one draw out of eleven in all competitions, and the manner in which they have achieved those victories, means that right now they must be considered favourites for every match they play.

Burnley v Arsenal – Sunday 1630
Positions: Burnley 13th, Arsenal 3rd

Form:
Burnley LWLDLW (7pts)
Arsenal LDWWWW (13pts)

  • Burnley produced possibly their best performance of the season to beat Watford on Monday, but they will find the in-form Arsenal side a more difficult proposition. Expect the Gunners to chalk up three more points here.

PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS – SEPT 24 TO SEPT 26

Manchester United v Leicester City – Saturday 1230
Positions: Man Utd 7th, Leicester 11th

Form (league matches only – earliest matches first):
Man Utd WWWLL (9pts)
Leicester LDWLW (7pts)

  • United have now lost three successive matches in all competitions, and the press stories are full of details of perceived weaknesses in their team. Yet only a short time ago they had won all of their first three matches and were looking very formidable. There has to be every chance United will get back to winning ways here as Leicester have made an inconsistent start and have only beaten Swansea and Burnley so far.

Bournemouth v Everton – Saturday 1500
Positions: Bournemouth 17th, Everton 2nd

Form:
Bournemouth LLDWL (4pts)
Everton DWWWW (13pts)

  • Everton have made a flying start and you would certainly fancy Everton (only three goals conceded to date) to beat Bournemouth (only three goals scored).

Liverpool v Hull City – Saturday 1500
Positions: Liverpool 6th, Hull 12th

Form:
Liverpool WLDWW (10pts)
Hull WWLDL (7pts)

  • Things are certainly looking up for Liverpool, who have recorded impressive wins over Leicester and Chelsea in their last two matches. Their only defeat to date came against Burnley in slightly freakish circumstances when they had 81% of possession. Jurgen Klopp’s side will certainly be favourites to beat Hull, who have not won in three.

Middlesbrough v Tottenham Hotspur – Saturday 1500
Positions: Middlesbrough 13th, Tottenham 3rd

Form:
Middlesbrough DWDLL (5pts)
Tottenham DWDWW (11pts)

  • Tottenham are unbeaten and once again their success is based on a sound defensive record, with only two goals conceded to date. Harry Kane’s injury is obviously a blow, but Middlesbrough have made an uneasy start to life in the Premier League and Spurs will still be favourites. Danny Rose has signed a new five year contract with Spurs this week.

Stoke City v West Bromwich Albion – Saturday 1500
Positions: Stoke 20th, West Brom 10th

Form:
Stoke DLLLL (1pt)
West Brom WLDLW (7pts)

  • Stoke have been seen as a team who are difficult to beat, but the Potters have conceded 14 goals already this season, which continues the poor defensive record they demonstrated at the end of last season. West Brom were themselves struggling to score until they put four past West Ham last time, and Stoke may be targeting this one to finally get a win on the board.

Sunderland v Crystal Palace – Saturday 1500
Postions: Sunderland 19th, Crystal Palace 8th

Form:
Sunderland LLDLL (1pt)
Crystal Palace LLDWW (7pts)

  • After a difficult start Palace are finding some form, but the same cannot be said for Sunderland. Palace probably start as favourites, but like Stoke, the Black Caps will also see this as a winnable home game where they could possibly kick start their season.

Swansea City v Manchester City – Saturday 1500
Positons: Swansea 15th, Man City 1st

Form:
Swansea WLLDL (4pts)
Man City WWWWW (15pts)

  • Not only have City won all five league matches, they have scored 15 goals in doing so, and have also won all eight matches in all competitions. Sergio Aguero’s suspension has not stopped the flow of goals and another three points is on the cards against a Swansea side who have not won in four.

Arsenal v Chelsea – Saturday 1730
Positions: Arsenal 4th, Chelsea 5th

Form:
Arsenal LDWWW (10pts)
Chelsea WWWDL (10pts)

  • An intriguing clash between an Arsenal side who appear to be finding form after not winning the first two, and a Chelsea side whose very promising start has tailed off a little. While Arsenal are in better form over the last two matches, none of their wins to date have been against a top eight team, and Chelsea could take the points here if their star players shine.

West Ham United v Southampton – Sunday 1600
Positions: West Ham 18th, Southampton 14th

Form:
West Ham LWLLL (3pts)
Southampton DLDLW (5pts)

  • West Ham continue to leak goals in an alarming fashion, but Southampton themselves only grabbed their first win last week. Like the other teams in the bottom three, the Hammers have a home match that they must be looking to win.

Burnley v Watford – Monday 2000
Positions: Burnley 16th, Watford 9th

Form:
Burnley LWLDL (4pts)
Watford DLLWW (7pts)

  • Burnley’s only win is still their scalp of Liverpool, which came in somewhat freakish circumstances when they had only 19% of possession. You would have to fancy Watford here, given they have banged seven goals past West Ham and Manchester United in their last two matches.

If Twitter Ruled The Premier League!

Are you like me....

Do you find that your mind wonders off thinking about absolutely bizarre things?

Well this happened to me yesterday!

The Conservatory!
I was sitting in my conservatory wondering why my grass seems to grow twice as quick as my neighbours.

It feels as though I spend most of my life cutting lawns!

Anyway this thought was then taken over by checking my twitter account.

One thing led to another and before I knew it I was checking which Premier League club had the most twitter followers.

In a rush of excitement I grabbed a pen and paper to see if my own beloved club (West Brom) had made it in to the European places.

Needless to say the 'Baggies' once again disappointed me as much as Pulis' weekly tactics. But nevertheless the finding were quite interesting as they mirrored closely what we can expect the final Premier League table to be come what May?

So here are the rankings according to Twitter!

1= Manchester United 8.0m
1= Arsenal 8.0m
3   Chelsea 7.3m
4   Liverpool 6.2m
5   Manchester City 3.5m
6   Tottenham 1.6m
7   West Ham 975.6k
8   Everton 935.8k
9   Leicester 835.1k
10 Southampton 625.1k
11 Swansea 609.3k
12 Stoke 592.6k
13 Sunderland 581.6k
14 West Bromwich Albion 502.3k
15 C.Palace 422.1k
16 Hull 281.6k
17 Watford 235.2k
18 Bournemouth 207.1k
19 Burnley 184.6k
20 Middlesbrough 158.4k

As you can see my club West Brom are massively underachieving, whilst Sunderland & Stoke are a massively overachieving!

Football Review - Sunderland v Everton

David Moyes takes on his former team Everton tonight at the Stadium Of Light.

Moyes has admitted that he expects this season to be a long hard struggle against relegation for his new side Sunderland, and things will not be easy tonight against the Toffees.

Romelu Lukaku is expected to play this evening and he could be a thorn in the side of the Sunderland defence. Lukaku has failed to score in the Premier League this season so will be eager to get off the mark.

Lukaku has been in scoring form more recently however with a double for his national side Belgium. Two goals against Cyrpus may well be enough to get him up and running in the Premier League this evening.

New manager Koeman will be wanting to improve on Everton's 11th position finish last season. His brought wisely in the Summer and Ashley Williams has been added to a creaking defense in possibly the best signing of the window.

Sunderland have a few injuries tonight and it's important that they can support their lifeline Defoe.

It will be an intriguing encounter and we expect a tight game.

Looking at all markets the best value on offer seems to be in the goal scoring markets with Lukaku 11/2 with Hills to be first goalscorer.

PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS – SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10 – MONDAY SEPTEMBER 12

Manchester United v Manchester City – Saturday 1230
Positions: Man Utd 3rd, Man City 1st

Form (league matches only – earliest matches first):
Man Utd WWW (9pts)
Man City WWW (9pts)

Key signings:
Manchester United – Paul Pogba (£89 million), Eric Bailly (£30 million), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£26.5 million),  Zlatan Ibrahimovic (free)
Manchester City – John Stones (£47.5 million), Leroy Sane (£37 million), Gabriel Jesus (£27 million), Ilkay Gundogan (£21 million), Claudio Bravo (£17.1 million), Nolito (£13.8 million)

Key departures:
Manchester United – Guillermo Varela (loan), Victor Valdes, Nick Powell, Will Keane, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson (loan)
Manchester City – Martin Demichelis, Joe Hart (loan), Samir Nasri (loan), Eliaquim Mangala (loan), Wilfried Bony (loan), Jason Denayer (loan)

  • This is not just the Manchester derby, but also a meeting of two teams with 100% records who look to have been much improved by their summer signings. Sergio Aguero starts a three match ban, so will this factor, together with home advantage, swing it for United?

Arsenal v Southampton – Saturday 1500
Positions: Arsenal 8th, Southampton 15th

Form:
Arsenal LDW (4pts)
Southampton DLD (2pts)

Key signings:
Arsenal – Shkodran Mustafi (£35 million), Granit Xhaka (£34 million), Lucas Perez (£17.1 million), Rob Holding (£2 million)
Southampton – Sofiane Boufal (£16 million), Nathan Redmond (£11 million), Alex McCarthy (£4 million), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (undisclosed)

Key departures:
Arsenal – Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta, Serge Gnabry, Jack Wilshere (loan), Calum Chambers (loan), Wojciech Szcesny (loan), Joel Campbell (loan)
Southampton – Sadio Mane, Victor Wanyama, Kelvin Davis, Graziano Pelle, Gaston Ramirez, Paulo Gazzaniga (loan)

  • Southampton have yet to record a win and have scored only twice in three matches. Arsenal have in a way answered the demands of their supporters for big money signings, even if Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez are not household names. Expect Arsenal to be favourites here.

Bournemouth v West Bromwich Albion – Saturday 1500
Positions: Bournemouth 19th, West Brom 10th

Form:
Bournemouth LLD (1pt)
West Brom WLD (4pts)

Key signings:
Bournemouth – Jordon Ibe (£15 million), Lys Mousset (£5.4 million), Lewis Cook (£10 million), Brad Smith (£6 million), Marc Wilson (£2 million), Nathan Ake (loan), Jack Wilshere (loan)
West Brom – Nacer Chadli (£13 million), Matt Phillips (£5.5 million), Allan Nyom (£4 million), Hal Robson-Kanu (free), Brendan Galloway (loan)

Key departures:
Bournemouth – Tommy Elphick, Matt Ritchie, Lee Tomlin
West Brom – Stephane Sessegnon, Victor Anichebe, James Chester, Ricky Lambert, Sebastien Pocognoli (loan)

  • Bournemouth perhaps pulled off one of the coups of deadline day in acquiring Jack Wilshere, but can he inspire his new club to a win? This match is one the South Coast club must be targeting as they seek their first victory. West Brom may have a more than useful signing themselves in the shape of Nacer Chadli.

Burnley v Hull – Saturday 1500
Positions: Burnley 13th, Hull 5th

Form:
Burnley LWL (3pts)
Hull WWL (6pts)

Key signings:
Burnley – Jeff Hendrick (£10 million), Steven Defour (£8 million), Nick Pope (£1.1 million), Patrick Bamford (loan)
Hull – Ryan Mason (£13 million), David Marshall (£3.5 million), Will Keane (£3 million), James Weir (undisclosed), Jonathan Edwards (free), Will Mannion (undisclosed compensation), Dieumerci Mbokani (loan), Markus Henriksen (loan)

Key departures:
Burnley – Joey Barton, Matt Gilks, Lloyd Dyer, Matt Taylor
Hull – Mohamed Diame, Ryan Taylor, Sone Aluko

  • Hull at last signed a raft of players just before the window closed, and in spite of having two wins under their belt, these new additions were much needed to improve the squad’s strength in depth. The confidence those wins have given Hull may make them slight favourites, although Burnley are another club to have smashed their transfer record with the arrival of Jeff Hendrick.

Middlesbrough v Crystal Palace – Saturday 1500
Positions: Middlesbrough 6th, Crystal Palace 17th

Form:
Middlesbrough DWD (5pts)
Crystal Palace LLD (1pt)

Key signings:
Middlesbrough – Marten de Roon (£12 million), Viktor Fisher (£3.8 million), Antonio Barragan (£3 million), Fabio da Silva (£2 million), Gaston Ramirez (free), Victor Valdes (free), Bernardo Espinoza (free), Adama Traore (undisclosed), Brad Guzan (free), Alvaro Negredo (loan)
Crystal Palace – Christian Benteke (£32 million), Andros Townsend (£13 million), James Tomkins (£10 million), Steve Mandanda (free), Mathieu Flamini (free), Loic Remy (loan)

Key departures:
Middlesbrough – Jonathan Woodgate
Crystal Palace – Dwight Gayle, Alex McCarthy, Brede Hangeland, Marouane Chamakh, Adrian Mariappa, Yannick Bolasie, Mile Jedinak

  • Crystal Palace finally scored their first goal of the season in stoppage time last time out to record their first point. Middlesbrough are unbeaten but have themselves sonly scored three so far, so a tight game could be in store. A Boro win by one goal looks a good bet.

Stoke City v Tottenham Hotspur – Saturday 1500
Positions: Stoke 20th, Tottenham 7th

Form:
Stoke DLL (1pt)
Tottenham DWD (5pts)

Key signings:
Stoke – Joe Allen (£13 million), Ramadan Sobhi (£5.5 million), Wilfried Bony (loan), Bruno Martins-Indi (loan)
Tottenham – Moussa Sissoko (£30 million), Vincent Janssen (£18.6 million), Georges-Kevin Nkoudou (£11 million), Victor Wanyama (£11 million)

Key departures:
Stoke – Peter Odemwingie, Steve Sidwell, Marc Wilson. Philipp Wollscheid
Tottenham – Alex Pritchard, Ryan Mason, Nacer Chadli, DeAndre Yedlin, Federico Fazio (loan), Nabil Bentaleb (loan)

  • Stoke are yet to win, but Tottenham have only scored three goals in three matches and are yet to totally convince. Harry Kane is still to find the net. Stoke may have made two shrewd signings in Wilfried Bony and Bruno Martins-Indi, but Tottenham are poised to unleash Moussa Sissoko. Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland will miss two more months of football through injury.

West Ham United v Watford – Saturday 1500
Positions: West Ham 12th, Watford 18th

Form:
West Ham LWL (3pts)
Watford DLL (1pt)

Key signings:
West Ham – Andre Ayew (£20.5 million), Manuel Lanzini (£9.4 million) – previously played for club as loan player, Arthur Masuaku (£6 million), Edimilson Fernandes (£5.5 million), Alvaro Arbeloa (free), Simone Zaza (loan)
Watford – Roberto Pereyra (£13.5 million), Isaac Success (£12.5 million), Daryl Janmaat (£7 million), Christian Kabasele (£5.8 million), Younes Kaboul (£3.5 million), Brice Dja Djedje (£3 million), Jerome Sinclair (free), Juan Camilo Zaniga (loan)

Key departures:
West Ham – James Tomkins, Enner Valencia (loan)
Watford - Almen Adbi, Jose Manuel Jurado, Allan Nyom, Matej Vydra

  • Two teams meet here who have made disappointing starts and who have two of the worst defensive records so far. West Ham may just edge an encounter where both sides score.

Liverpool v Leicester City – Saturday 1730
Positions: Liverpool 11th, Leicester 9th

Form:
Liverpool WLD (4pts)
Leicester LDW (4pts)

Key signings:
Liverpool – Sadio Mane (£36 million), Georginio Wijnaldum (£25 million), Loris Karius (£4.5 million), Ragnar Klavan (unknown)
Leicester – Islam Slimani (£29.7 million), Nampalys Mendy (£13 million), Bartosz Kapustka (£7.5 million), Ron-Robert Zieler (£2.6 million), Ahmed Musa (undisclosed), Luis Hernandez (free)

Key departures:
Liverpool – Jordon Ibe, Joe Allen, Martin Skrtel, Jerome Sinclair, Brad Smith, Christian Benteke, Luis Alberto, Andre Wisdom (loan)
Leicester - N’Golo Kante, Andrej Kramaric, Mark Schwarzer, Ritchie DeLaet, Gokhan Inler

  • Neither side has produced what they are really capable of so far, and both sit in mid table. Both teams have players who can turn games with individual moments of brilliance, but perhaps a score draw is a good bet here. Leicester’s Danny Simpson has signed a new three year contract.

Swansea City v Chelsea – Sunday 1600
Positions: Swansea 14th, Chelsea 2nd

Form:
Chelsea WWW (9pts)
Swansea WLL (3pts)

Key signings:
Swansea – Borja Gonzalez (£15.5 million), Alfie Mawson (£5 million), Leroy Fer (£4.75 million), Mike van der Hoorn (free), Fernando Llorente (undisclosed)
Chelsea – Michy Batshuayi (£33.2 million), N’Golo Kante (£32 million), David Luiz (£30 million), Marcos Alonso (£23 million)

Key departures:
Swansea – Ashley Williams, Andre Ayew, Eder, Alberto Paloschi, Bafetimbi Gomis (loan)
Chelsea – Mohammed Salah, Baba Rahman (loan), Nathan Ake (loan), Patrick Bamford (loan), Christian Atsu (loan), Loic Remy (loan)

  • Chelsea have started superbly, with many players unrecognisable from last season, especially Eden Hazard. They will expect to make it four wins out of four against a Swansea side who have lost their last two matches.

Sunderland v Everton – Monday 2000
Positions: Sunderland 16th, Everton 4th

Form:
Sunderland LLD (1pt)
Everton DWW (7pts)

Key signings:
Sunderland – Didier Ndong (£13.6 million), Papy Djilobodji (£8 million), Paddy McNair, Donald Love (£5.5 million combined), Mika (undisclosed), Adnan Januzaj (loan), Jason Denayer (loan)
Everton – Yannick Bolasie (£28 million), Ashley Williams (£12 million), Idrissa Gueye (£7.1 million), Marten Stekelenburg (free), Enner Valencia (loan)

Key departures:
Sunderland – Emmanuel Giaccherini, Danny Graham, Steven Fletcher, Wes Brown, Younes Kaboul
Everton – John Stones, Leon Osman, Tim Howard, Tony Hibbert, Steven Pienaar

  • Everton have made an excellent start, and on current form you would back them to add another three points here. Sunderland’s Fabio Borini will be out injured for three months, and Vito Mannone also faces an extended period on the sidelines, but here the club have signed goalkeeper Mika as a reinforcement.
