PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS – SATURDAY APRIL 30 – MONDAY MAY 2

Everton v Bournemouth – Saturday 1500

Positions: Everton 11th, Bournemouth 14th

Form (League matches only – earliest matches first):

Everton
LLDDDL (3pts)

Bournemouth
WLLWLL (6pts)

  • Everton have a very poor defensive record in home matches, and still have injuries in defence; while Bournemouth’s goals against tally is the third highest in the division. So there could well be goals here, more likely than not arising from mistakes rather than moments of outstanding skill.

Newcastle United v Crystal Palace – Saturday 1500

Positions: Newcastle 19th, Crystal Palace 16th

Form:

Newcastle
DLLWDD (6pts)

Crystal Palace
LDWDDL (6pts)

  • Newcastle are unbeaten in three, but remain in serious trouble in second bottom spot. They came from 2-0 down to draw against Liverpool last week, and will need more of the same spirit during the rest of the season if they are to survive. Palace’s form remains poor – in the league at least – and the Magpies are likely to see this as a ‘must win’ game.

Stoke City v Sunderland – Saturday 1500

Positions: Stoke 10th, Sunderland 17th

Form:

Stoke
LWDLLL (4pts)

Sunderland
DDDLWD (7pts)

  • Sunderland still have a lot of work to do to preserve their Premier League status, and like local rivals Newcastle, this is one of the matches they will be targeting for a win. Three successive defeats, conceding four goals in each, suggests a lot about how Stoke are approaching their end of season dead rubbers.

Watford v Aston Villa – Saturday 1500

Positions: Watford 12th, Aston Villa 20th

Form:

Watford
LLLDWL (4pts)

Aston Villa
LLLLLL (0pts)

  • Watford have won just one of their last eight league matches, and also lost their FA Cup semi-final last weekend. However, any team playing hapless Aston Villa at present is likely to win. Gabriel Agbonlahor has resigned as Villa club captain after a series of adverse headlines in recent weeks.

West Bromwich Albion v West Ham United – Saturday 1500

Positions: West Brom 13th, West Ham 6th

Form:

West Brom
LDLLLD (2pts)

West Ham
WDDDDW (10pts)

  • The form table massively favours West Ham, but things many not be quite as easy for the Hammers as one might think. In drawing four successive matches recently, Slaven Bilic’s side conceded nine goals. If West Brom can reproduce their second half display from Monday’s match with Tottenham, they could make life awkward for another top six side here.

Arsenal v Norwich City – Saturday 1730

Positions: Arsenal 4th, Norwich 18th

Form:

Arsenal
WWDDWD (12pts)

Norwich
LDWWLL (7pts)

  • Norwich suffered a potentially damaging defeat to Sunderland last time out, but may still stand a chance here. Arsenal are unbeaten in seven, but four of those have been draws, and the fans are making the Emirates far from welcoming for their team at present. Arsenal were held by Crystal Palace in their last home match, and another banana skin awaits here in the shape of a Canaries side fighting for survival.

Swansea City v Liverpool – Sunday 1200

Positions: Swansea 15th, Liverpool 7th

Form:

Swansea
LWDWLL (7pts)

Liverpool
LDWWWD (11pts)

  • Two matches ago, Swansea defeated Chelsea, but the joy was short lived as they conceded seven goals in losing their next two matches. Although Liverpool will have played their Europa League semi-final only three days later, their better recent form makes them favourites here. Liverpool’s Mahmadou Sakho will be suspended from this match – and probably many more – after his positive drugs test.

Manchester United v Leicester City – Saturday 1405

Positions: Man Utd 5th, Leicester 1st

Form:

Man Utd
LWWLWW (12pts)

Leicester
WWWWDW (16pts)

  • This could be the day when the title is decided. After winning seven of their last nine matches, surely Leicester will claim the one win they may still need to clinch the title at some stage in their remaining three matches? But will it be here? With United having won six of the last seven in all competitions; with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford posing a huge threat upfront; and with Jamie Vardy suspended for an additional match, this will be a very tough assignment for Leicester. However their recent results and recent defensive records suggests they can claim at least a point here. Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri recently said that it was ‘now or never’ for his team, and logic is on his side. The Foxes will not start next season as a 5,000-1 bet for the title but star players (and possibly their manager) may move on in the summer in search of higher wages; they may not be as lucky with injuries next year; Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United may all be stronger next year; and no one will ever make the mistake of underestimating them again!

Southampton v Manchester City – Saturday 1630

Positions: Southampton 8th, Man City 3rd

Form:

Southampton
WWLWDW (13pts)

Man City
LWWWDW (13pts)

  • City cannot let their league focus slip, given they are yet to confirm their Champions League place for next season. However, the fact that this match takes place in between the two legs of City’s semi-final with Real Madrid must increase the chances of a Southampton side who are themselves in good form.

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur – Monday 2000

Positions: Chelsea 9th, Tottenham 2nd

Form:

Chelsea
DDWLLW (8pts)

Tottenham
WWDWWD (14pts)

  • Even if Leicester do not finish the job the previous day, defeat here will spell the end of Tottenham’s title challenge. Spurs will do well to come through this test in a spicy London derby atmosphere and keep the title race alive. At time of writing, retrospective action had not yet been taken against Dele Alli for his alleged punch against West Brom.

PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS – SATURDAY APRIL 23 – MONDAY APRIL 25

Manchester City v Stoke City – Saturday 1245

Positions: Man City 4th, Stoke 9th

Form (League matches only – earliest matches first):

Man City
DLWWWD (11pts)

Stoke
DLWDLL (5pts)

  • Manchester City’s performance against Newcastle was far from perfect, but their performances in the few matches prior to that have been excellent. Stoke’s best hope may be that the Blues rest players ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final, but with the Potters having just one win in six, and having conceded eight goals in losing their last two matches, you still have to fancy Manuel Pellegrini’s side here. Samir Nasri is doubtful with injury for Man City, while Stoke’s Xerdan Shaqiri definitely misses the match.

Aston Villa v Southampton – Saturday 1500

Positions: Aston Villa 20th, Southampton 8th

Form:

Aston Villa
LLLLLL (0pts)

Southampton
DWWLWD (11pts)

  • Aston Villa are now mathematically relegated from the Premier League, and the turmoil at the club only increased this week with the resignation of two directors and more adverse publicity regarding the off-field activities of Gabriel Agbonlahor. Villa have now lost their last nine matches, and few would bet against that run continuing in their remaining four matches. Southampton have to start as strong favourites.

Bournemouth v Chelsea – Saturday 1500

Positions: Bournemouth 13th, Chelsea 10th

Form:

Bournemouth
WWLLWL (9pts)

Chelsea
WDDWLL (8pts)

  • Chelsea’s long unbeaten run in domestic matches under Guus Hiddink almost seems a distant memory now after their two recent losses. But Bournemouth are another side that seem to be just playing out time in mid-table, and maybe the Blues will get back to winning ways here.

Liverpool v Newcastle United – Saturday 1500

Positions: Newcastle 19th, Liverpool 7th

Form:

Liverpool
WLDWWW (13pts)

Newcastle
LDLLWD (5pts)

  • Newcastle, having looked down and out two matches ago, will have been cheered by their win over Swansea and their performance in drawing with Manchester City. However they will still do well to get anything out of this fixture, with Liverpool having scored ten in winning their last three matches.

Sunderland v Arsenal – Sunday 1405

Positions: Sunderland 18th, Arsenal 3rd

Form:

Sunderland
DDDDLW (7pts)

Arsenal
DWWDDW (12pts)

  • The Arsenal faithful booed the team off after their draw with Crystal Palace last weekend, but they are still unbeaten in six, and will start as favourites despite Sunderland’s vital win over Norwich last time out.

Leicester City v Swansea City – Sunday 1615

Positions: Leicester 1st, Swansea 14th

Form:

Leicester
WWWWWL (15pts)

Swansea
WLWDWL (10pts)

  • Leicester’s winning run, and their run of clean sheets, ended last week. Although Jamie Vardy is suspended here, Leicester will be favourites to take three points – they need a maximum of eight from their last four matches to be guaranteed the title.

Tottenham Hotspur v West Bromwich Albion – Monday 2000

Positions: Tottenham 2nd, West Brom 15th

Form:

Tottenham
DWWDWW (14pts)

West Brom
WLDLLL (4pts)

  • Tottenham once again play after their title rivals, but this has caused them little difficulty in recent weeks. They look in superb form, and on recent evidence they could easily win all their remaining games and force Leicester to gain eight more points to hold off their challenge. With two goals in their last six matches, West Brom are not expected to stop their momentum here.

FA CUP SEMI FINAL MATCH PREVIEWS – SATURDAY APRIL 23 – SUNDAY APRIL 24

(both matches at Wembley Stadium)

Everton v Manchester United – Saturday 1715

League Positions: Everton 11th, Man Utd 5th

  • Concerns over Everton’s consistency, and the standard of their defending, were not helped by their 4-0 thrashing in the Merseyside derby. United are perhaps in their best form of the season right now, and must be fancied here. Ramiro Funes Mori is suspended for Everton, and they may also be without Gareth Barry and John Stones, leaving them looking threadbare at the back.

Crystal Palace v Watford – Sunday 1600

League Positions: Crystal Palace 16th, Watford 12th

  • The FA Cup has been Palace’s lifeline this season, and they are in better form in recent league matches than Watford. So a repeat of the United-Palace final from 1990 could be on the cards. Watford’s Nordin Amrabat will be suspended after his red card in midweek.

PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS SATURDAY APRIL 16 – MONDAY APRIL 18

Norwich City v Sunderland - Saturday 1245
Positions: Norwich 17th, Sunderland 18th
Form (last six matches – league matches only – earliest results first):

Norwich
LLDWWL (7pts)

Sunderland
LDDDDL (4pts)
·         It is a far from unlikely outcome that the winner of this match will stay up, and benefit from the new TV riches on offer next season, while the loser will be relegated. Hence almost any amount of hype regarding this match is justified – this is a huge game. On recent form, perhaps Norwich enjoy a slight advantage.

Everton v Southampton – Saturday 1500
Positions: Everton 12th, Southampton 7th
Form:

Everton
WLLLDD (5pts)

Southampton
LDWWLW (10pts)
·         Everton’s poor home record and recent form in general, together with the likelihood their attention is already turning to next week’s FA Cup semi-final, means Southampton have to be fancied here.

Manchester United v Aston Villa – Saturday 1500
Positions: Man Utd 5th, Aston Villa 20th
Form:

Man Utd
WWLWWL (12pts)

Aston Villa
LLLLLL (0pts)
·         United fans were hugely disappointed by their showing against Tottenham in the last league match, but their performance at West Ham in the FA Cup was much better. As for Villa, they are probably wishing the season would end, and another defeat for the Midlanders appears to be on the cards here.

Newcastle United v Swansea City – Saturday 1500
Positions: Newcastle 19th, Swansea 13th
Form:

Newcastle
LLLDLL (1pt)

Swansea
WWLWDW (13pts)
·         Newcastle will be targeting a home match against a bottom half side with little to play for as one of the matches they need to win if they have any chance of survival. But after Swansea’s win over Chelsea last week, and given the manner of some of Newcastle’s recent defeats, no Magpies fan will walk through the turnstiles confident of bagging three points.

Watford v West Bromwich Albion – Saturday 1500
Positions: West Brom 14th, Watford 15th
Form:

West Brom
WDWLDL (8pts)

Watford
DLLLLD (2pts)
·         Possibly the match which has the least at stake this weekend. West Brom are in a good mood as they appear to be on course for their best Premier League finish to date, while the goals have dried up in recent weeks for Watford’s once prolific front two of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney. With Watford likely to have half an eye on the FA Cup semi, the Baggies probably start as favourites.

Chelsea v Manchester City – Saturday 1730
Positions: Chelsea 10th, Man City 4th
Form:

Chelsea
WWDDWL (11pts)

Man City
LWDLWW (10pts)
·         Despite their loss to Swansea last week, one suspects that Chelsea will prove a very tough test indeed, and after their Champions League success in the week, City’s chances of qualifying for next year’s competition could take a dent here.

Bournemouth v Liverpool – Sunday 1330
Positions: Bournemouth 11th, Liverpool 8th
Form:

Bournemouth
WWWLLW (12pts)

Liverpool
WWWLDW (13pts)
·         If Liverpool produce the same level of performance as last week’s win over Stoke, they will surely win again here. Bournemouth have won four of the last six, but in the main their successes have come against teams in the lower half of the table, and they have often struggled against the bigger teams.
Leicester City v West Ham United – Sunday 1330
Positions: Leicester 1st, West Ham 6th
Form:

Leicester
DWWWWW (16pts)

West Ham
WWWDDD (12pts)
·         Despite Andy Carroll’s hat-trick last week, Leicester’s superb defensive record – five successive wins, all with clean sheets - means they have to be fancied to take another step towards the title here.

Arsenal v Crystal Palace – Sunday 1600
Positions: Arsenal 3rd, Crystal Palace 16th
Form:
Arsenal
LLDWWD (8pts)

Crystal Palace
DLLDWD (6pts)
·         Despite finally breaking their winless run last week, Palace will have their work cut out if they want to stop Arsenal collecting three points here.

Stoke City v Tottenham Hotspur – Monday 2000
Form:

Stoke
WDLWDL (8pts)

Tottenham
LDWWDW (11pts)
Positions: Stoke 9th, Tottenham 2nd
·         Tottenham responded superbly last week when starting their match 10 points adrift of Leicester. They may well have to do the same again here, and while Stoke’s season appears to be drifting to a mid-table finish, expect the Potters to be up for this one as they look to add to the list of big teams beaten at the Britannia this season.
